v6 Explorer Question - Muffler/exhaust

Hey guys
I thought I'd post here about my Explorer (2005 v6) because you seem to have more tech knowledge than the guys on the Explorer forums - and you helped me a little with a tire purchase...

So here goes - I'm thinking of getting a muffler for my exp - problem is, the only thing the guys on the explorer forums are putting on is flowmaster 40 series (on their v6s). The knock on them, or so I hear, is that at higher rpms, it doesn't sound good. It looks like a lot of you have either a Borla & a couple of you have a Hooker Aerochamber. I'm thinking the Borla is more expensive? What do you suggest for me - something with a lower/mellow tone. I don't really want loud. Any clue as to the diameter of my exhaust? Thanks for any light you can shed for me.

Ha, i know what you are talking about - some people over on Explorer Forum are pretty unhelpful...

Anyway, from what you are explaining, it sounds like you will be happy with a Borla or Magnaflow muffler. If you want quiet, keep the original pipes (which should be 2.25" or 2.5") and just swap the stock muffler.

If you want the OEM look, but a bit louder than the single exhaust with the aftermarket muffler, keep the OEM pipe but have the shop add another matching pipe to the passenger side. This will create mostly the same sound as a single exhaust, just a bit louder.

Also, another thing to add some depth to your exhaust is a nice set of 3x18" or 3.5x18" exhaust tips. The bigger the tips, the deeper the note.

Id recomend Gibson. I had their stock exit SS kit on my 05 ranger and I loved it. It was nice and low toned but didnt drone at speed either. I had a Flowmaster 40 series on my 2000 ranger and I hated it. didnt sound that good and it drones like crazy.

I had quite a few setups, Stock, Dynomax turbo, Flowmaster 40, Glasspack, Magnaflow, Super 40 or 44 (can't remember), and finally a Cherry Bomb Pro series muffler. The Cherry Bomb pro has given me the best sound, a nice interior note that doesn't drive me nuts on the highway, or my passengers, and was cheaper than most. Heres a link to my sound clip on youtube.

4.0 Cherry Bomb Pro

Any thoughts on the Hooker, Edelbrock or Dynomax? The Borla is pretty expensive

Magnaflows dont sound too bad either. They are like the step down form the Borla's.

Explorer Magnaflow Exhaust

Ranger 4.0 Gibson Exhaust

You can listen to the gibson 4.6 as well as the 4.0 on their site. and gibson should be alot cheaper then most companies.
