Yeh all that stuff is put on their for a reason. your truck needs the sensors and data to properly run. we all know how annoying they can be, but there is no way around it. Like Earl43P said, post your CEL codes and we can help you diagnose them with hopefully as little trouble as possible!

You can take it to your local auto part store. Most will check it for free or loan you a scanner to do it. I also recommend purchasing a basic one. The one I have just reads the code, and allows you to erase it. It has a book that give you what the code means. But for $40 you cant beat it for convenience.

Ah yes the beauty of living under the stars and stripes.... In Canada, the parts stores will not scan the codes for you, only refer you to their favorie mechanic who will only charge the princely sum of $50-100 for the service..... I am looking to buy one, but I don't really know what to look for in a scanner. Any advice?

Yeh for the price of having it read once, you can purchase one. There are many different brands out there. But they basically do the same thing. Like I said earlier, I have a basic one. This is the one I haveActron Pocket Scan
I like this one because its small and cheep. It does exactly what I need and gives me a code and allows me to erase it. The larger ones such as this Actron AutoScanner
You certainly get what you pay for. But I am cheap and in college so the first one will do for several more years.
Hope this helps.
BTW I have several ACTRON products such as their compression tester, fuel pressure tester, and OBD 2 Scanner. All have been great products.

So you had a Lean Bank 1, and now you have a lean bank 2 right? You said you fixed the vacume problem. What did you do?
On my 97 OHV 4.0 I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets to fix my bank 1 & 2 lean code. Right after I fixed mine, my roommate who has a 97 4.0 ranger also had the same code come up on hers. we did the gaskets and all is well with both trucks.

Umm it isn't that hard of a job, its just mainly a time consuming process. It helps to have two people because the weight of the intake manifold is kinda heavy to place it back in without messing up the gasket. It really just depends on how comfortable you are with taking apart your truck.
So before you go and do this can you post the CEL codes your getting. It seems the last message you had was on something different than Bank 1 & 2 lean

Okay so I just went throught the whole post and i have not seen any information on what has been replaced. So lets start from the beginning and work are way to where we are at now.
When did the problem start? Was it a all of a sudden or did it start to get ****ty over a period of time?
Now what parts have been replaced?
-Spark Plugs?
-Wires?
-Fuel Filter?
-Any Sensors?
-Vacume Lines?
-Clean or Replace Air Filter?
-Anything Else?
Lets get this figured out!

Sorry my previous posts have been kind of vague.... The problem started last January after the truck had sat for the summer and fall. It started to have an erratic idle, and if you were coming to a stop and clutched it the engine would almost stall. I took it to my mechanic and he cleaned the IAC, MAF sensor, and put a new fuel filter, and spark plugs in it. Shortly there after, the CEL came on and I found one of the vac lines had rubbed through, and was leaking, so I replaced it. After that it worked fine all winter and then about June I put a cold air intake on it (homemade). About August I put a Dynomax 3" cat-back exhaust on it, and the sometime around middle of September the idle started becoming more and more erratic. It was not to the point of stalling as it was before, but it was noticeable. I took the IAC apart and cleaned it and it seemed to work for a couple of weeks, and then it started acting up again, and that is when I joined this forum, and started asking questions. I have since purchased a scanner to read the codes hoping this would help. Thanks for your patience, and help...
By the way - The truck has 300000+ KM on it, so it is well broken in...!
