Where to...
Hello there,
New here and happy to be here with my new (to me), Ranger 2001, 4x4, manual transmission, V6 4.0. Is my first Ford ever and always love to have a pick up! … so need to ask where to buy new engine, body parts (OEM) in good, decent prices (inflation exists). Amazon some times works but not friend to have one choice. Sorry to ask this…Thks! |
I'm not on the welcoming committee but, WELCOME!
How many miles/km are on your '01? Do you have any idea of how the vehicle was maintained? What's it's general condition? Do you need an engine? I don't believe the 4.0l SOHC is still in production. Engines can be repaired or completely rebuilt. Local rebuilders, national rebuilders and salvage yards are used when sourcing a complete engine. Cross that bridge when you come to it but do begin looking at what resources are near you. Where is "DF"? Speaking of engines, if your timing chain tensioners are original to the vehicle and have >100K miles, it's time to change 'em to the improved ones. Looks like body parts are still available as I just checked tascaparts.com and they had listings. If rust is your problem there are companies which make replacement sections which need to be welded in and finished. LMCtruck.com has specified catalogs covering popular trucks. Their catalog is a little incomplete but they have some things for our trucks. Items like weather striping, door hardware, grilles and other stuff is there. Lots of things are absent but request their catalog anyway. It's one of the last paper catalogs you'll see. |
Welcome to the forum
car-part.com is a good place to source used parts in your area https://www.lmctruck.com/ is a good place for replacement parts for body and interior, not drive train 2001 Ranger was first year for the 4.0l SOHC engines in Rangers, these had timing chain issues thru 2003, need to replace the 2 long chain tensioners on any "replacement" engine, regardless of year, and then replace these every 100k miles after that You can use 2001-2011 4.0l SOHC engine from a Ranger or Mazda B4000, 2wd or 4x4 doesn't matter for that Used 2001-2003 4.0l SOHC engine would be a roll of the dice as it could already have broken timing chain guides There was nothing wrong with the 4.0l SOHC except for the tensioners failing, since you are pulling the engine anyway it might be better to just redo the timing chains and tensioners and use the engine you have May need to swap over intakes depending on year you get Also replace thermostat and housing, they cracked and leaked, there is a metal replacement version Replace knock sensor as its hard to get at with intake on Always replace rear main seal anytime any engine is out 2001 was first year for the 4x4CM, 4wd control module, these were a known failure point, its behind the passenger side kick panel in 2001, used are a bad gamble for these unless the wrecking yard offers a free exchange |
Good day an many thanks for your lines...
This is "my" Ranger https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.ran...8517cefba4.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.ran...17d6db11b9.jpg Was parking for two years...so far fuel pump, gas filter, gas tank cleaner. A lot to do... |
Thanks for your advice and for your time.
A lot to do…it has 130K miles; almost no rust; paint 5/10; engine sounds good (I have not idea about Ford 4.0 sounds); clutch works; electrical appears to be ok; interior 6/10. My to do list: 4x4 not working (no lights, etc. I’ve read your post. I need to buy new CM). Thermostat and housing. Several parts in front suspension (no problem). Climate control unit. Check A/C. Front, rear differentials oil. Manual transmission oil. Brake inspection / change fluid. Not know much about it past, the other owner toll me he change oil with regularity, several time went to shop. My really concern is chain tensioners, quite task! Here you can find very expensive aftermarks (Chinese) parts, so I prefer better quality and that was my post “Where to…” Again thanks for everything. |
It is interesting how similar it is to a North American Ranger, even though it is a crew cab. Usually the South American Rangers were visually different from ours with different engines and different bumpers.

Good looking 2001 Ford Ranger 4x4 ManualTransmission 4Door !!! Assuming "DF" is MexicoCityDF area?
Near same truck as my 2001 Ford ExplorerSportTrac 4x4 4Door, though I've got a notorious 5r55e AutoTransmission. Hope info below helps. Ditto on RonD's recommendations: ~ change two OilPressurized TimingTensioners; use only FordOE for these. ~ swap junk Plastic ThermoStat Housing to Aluminum ThermoStat Housing, new 192f=89c or lower rated ThermoStat valve. ~ TransferCase 4x4ShiftMotor & 4x4ConModule are known failure items but relatively easy to change out. ~ Engine Oil 5w30.FullSyn & Filter change every 6months\5kMiles\8kKlicks. Change all Hoses + SerpBelt + PCVValve + AirFilter + FuelFilter + O2Sensors. Check PCVHoseAssemblies + IntakeManifoldGaskets + EmissionSystem for VacLeaks. Change all fluids now, then every 3years\33kMiles\50kKlicks: ~ Coolant 50/50Green ~ BrakeFluid DOT3 ~ SteeringFluid MerconV ~ TransferCase MerconLV ~ Rear Diff 75w140.FullSyn + FrictionModifier ~ Fore Diff 75w90.FullSyn Consider swapping stock PlasticTanked 1or2Row Radiator to AllAluminum 3or4Row Radiator = notable increase in cooling capacity; new 16psiRadiatorCap. Consider swapping stock Radiator 1.5"=38mmID RubberHoses for StainlessFlex = smaller increase in cooling capacity. Consider swapping stock Plastic VacToClose HeaterControlValve for a Metal version; this will likely crack+leak when you change hoses.
