Thermostat Advise

I talked to a mechanic the other day about mypoor gas mileage and the fact that it gets waaay worse durring the winter. He told me that it sounds like it needs a new thermostat. My temp guage goes right to the middle after about 5 minutes of driving though so does anyone think that should mean the thermostats fine?

I'm not sure if that means your thermostat is bad or not, but for 3 dollars and half an hour you might as well just change it out. Its easy to do and doesn't take long at all.

tell me where you're getting a $3 thermostat please. I stick to Motorcraft and it was $31 when I bought mine.

A new stat won't increase your mileage. Only if it was stuck open and running below 160F would the fuel get richer.

Mine was like 6.50 for the low temp one at autozone, Where are you buying yours?! 31 is ridiculous.

FYI... Stant makes the OEM ford stats in the same vats of oil and use the same tooling as they do for thier aftermarket units. I've personally been there.

Is your tune is adjusted for it? There is a setting in my 06's tune for recognizing fully warmed at 160F. This can effect your idle rpms too.

It might "work". But if not changed your right on the verge of running in a warm up mode. (richer and/or higher rpms)

I don't recall prices but I was told to use a chrome stat because it's less likely to stick. I did this on several of my other cars and I never had a problem. You'll pay a little more for a chrome t stat
