engine running rich

Ok so I pulled the spark plugs Saturday figuring they would let me know how bad the rich condition might be, they didn't seem that bad? so I figured for the heck of it id put a new set in. not sure if it matters that much but the ones I had in it were gapped a lil short of 54..like 50. she seems to run better with the new ones gapped at 54. I noticed the stft are about 15 to 19% bank one and higher bank 2. ltft are at 0. I am wondering if putting the explorer dual inlet fuel filter as return setup is feeding a bit too much fuel ?

Over +15 on bank 1 with bank 2 between -5 and +5 means either an intake leak on bank 1 or exhaust manifold leak on bank 1

Fuel pressure effects both banks, as would MAF sensor or upper intake air leak.

A misfire on bank 1 will also cause higher STFT

STFT is the open time for the fuel injectors, + means open longer that calculated, - means shorter open time than calculated.
O2 sensor oxygen levels cause computer to change open time.

So could be O2 sensor on bank 1 is getting old, or was carbon fouled, O2 sensors use a chemical reaction to read oxygen levels so do wear out just like car batteries do, chemical just gets used up.

My bet is possible exhaust leak? but could be intake leak although she idles so nice find that hard to believe. driver side, bank one, exhaust had to be modified to fit oil pan, we cut one side of the pipe, bent it somewhat straight, welded in half a pipe over opening. possible it has a pin hole? 02 sensor on bank 1 side is only new one but if I can I might pull it and give it a look. bank 2 is old one. it is possible 02 could be carbon fouled considering how she ran when first on road. I appreciate the advice. I just noticed you said exhaust manifold leak on bank one. I guess its possible I have a tiny leak that I cant hear due to loud mufflers. ok I get the stft now, something is telling the computer to keep injectors open longer, or shorter than it calculates it should so it sets code, in this case rich or too long. so my bank 1 is open twice as long as it should be or more.

Lol, I have been noticing dampness in drivers front wheel well and was nervous because I have a rusty brake line so I figured it was ready to blow, got home from work today and took a good look at the line. I gently pulled fuel line away from the brake line to see where brake line goes to and starts. I got a small spray in the face almost from fuel line. its where the engine rail extends down and connects to ranger line. kinda freaked me some, then I gave it a gentle pull to be sure I was right, I can see fuel running down side of engine, nice lil stream too, its leaking up top I'm guessing at connection to rail and at other end. if its leaking out it can suck air in right? I just hope I don't have to take upper intake off to repair or replace? but if so it will be worth it

Well somehow the fuel line came loose at fuel rail ?? I'm pretty sure I took the mountaineer line from frame hookup to rail and its been on for a year but it came loose. I hooked it back up but a lil concerned it may do it again? since I had to take upper intake off I'm giving it a cleaning and some blue paint..lol, I saw a guys pics that did that and it does look good.

Ok, I figured out the line plugs into rail and I thought it locked in but supposed to hav a retainer clip that is missing. I made a home made retainer with tie straps and it should be fine. cleaning and prepping upper intake for some ford blue, gotta wait for gaskets anyway.

Summit pretty darn quick, yes they r next door in Ohio but I called about 5 pm yesterday and box was delivered today. I put top end back together, blue plenum does look sharp..lol. she takes a bit to start? doesn't kick over like b4? either spark is slow or fuel, she idles a lil rough but doesn't stall. she runs ok if I go for a ride. feels like a vacuum leak at idle but ill have to keep looking for whatever. the lil vacuum block I got to hook all the stuff to has 6 ports and a big port at end, I blocked off the end since I have no way to connect to it, too large. I have engine vac at 1st port, put one of their blocks in 2nd the egr, fuel reg, heater stuff, then evap in last. I found the lil screw in block was almost out so I tightened it and she almost seemed to idle smooth. will just keep going over everything. ill double check pcv , its in a shitty place to get to..lol

I needed to take truck to get something across town. the drive seems to have helped. the idle is a lil better and she ran fine. maybe she needed a breakin after taking her apart and having several sensors unplugged as well as battery disconnected for a solid day

after I wrote last message I went out and opened hood for whatever reason and found that the vac line going to heater divertor valve had come off. I got a longer hose and redid it and fired her up...smoother idle of course
