2006 Ranger w/1985 302 AOD
Greetings,
I intend to convert my '06 Ranger 3.0 Automatic 4x2 to a 302 w/AOD tranny. The engine and tranny came out of a 1985 Mustang.2 bbl, AOD. I guess I'll tackle the gauges as I get to them, but I'd like to know if anyone can give me a heads up regarding the ABS system and pointers to integrate it with the carbureted V8. I understand that an Explorer/Mountaineer donor is preferred, but it is what it is. How many conversion obstacles am I looking at here? Thanks. |

You will need a 2000 or older instrument cluster, 2006 is computer controlled.
Tach Oil Temp Are why you need older cluster Fuel and Voltage is the same AOD will have speedometer cable gear setup on tail shaft, you can use a gear driven VSS(vehicle speed sensor) there, they used them in AOD and AODE vehicles They output 8,000PPM which is what electric speedometer and cruise control expect, you change the gear to calibrate. They look like this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...d=240890&.jpg= Cable only in the middle VSS added to cable drive on the sides, these combo units were used when transmissions got solenoids controlled by the computer, the computer needed a speed sensor, the VSS was also used for Cruise. 2006 4WABS is a separate system, doesn't use computer(PCM) Diagram below |
Thanks, RonD
exactly what I needed!

The Explorer instrument cluster had V8 setting(after 1996) for tach and fit Rangers so I would go that route, not sure when they got digital dash but 1998-2001 should be safe bet
Found this on tach signals by year: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...chwiring.shtml Since you will be using a Coil you hook to the"-" terminal on the coil to get signal and run that to the Tach wire in dash |
