302

i might get a 82 f 150 it has a 302 how can i pep it up

99rngr 03-21-2010 09:03 PM

Depending on money... Cam, Port and Polish, Supercharge, Turbo, etc.

ford rules 03-22-2010 07:59 PM

Maybe GT 40 heads intake and a cam and headers that would wake it up im sure.

Toreador4x4 03-22-2010 08:02 PM

convert it to a roller motor first

old87ranger 03-22-2010 08:03 PM

well the guy backed out of the deal but im still trying to convince him. it was his wife that didnt want to get ride of it cause she cant drive standard which mine is

well the truck isnt running anymore dont no what happend so im going to buy it for 200$ and see if icant get it going

evilclown312 03-29-2010 07:31 PM

Sounds like a good deal. Good thing you didn't trade for it lol.

old87ranger 03-31-2010 08:07 PM

yea but now i got to figure out whats wrong with it

David N 03-31-2010 08:28 PM

Yes. Intake, heads, cam, and headers will wake up a stock 302 pretty good.

old87ranger 03-31-2010 08:33 PM

intake and headers i planed on doing cause its cheap and easy well the cam is kinda diffucult and heads are pretty pricey

Just do the cam out of the truck. Arent you going to have to pull the motor? Do it then. And you should be able to find a used good set of GT 40 heads for less than $400.

old87ranger 03-31-2010 09:27 PM

idk if im going to pull the engine yet i dont want to but might have to

How is this going ?

I have a 302 already but waiting to make “the list” of the parts I need, mainly a five speed/transfer case.

Just a comment, IMHO, stick to headers, and a better air filter on the intake, maybe a better intake tube but don’t go overboard for street/off-road use.

Porting and Polishing head for street use or lower rpm use is not a good thing.
P & P is too make the fuel/air mixture slip by faster. problem is the air/fuel is going so slow at low rpms that the air/fuel separate some and do not give you a good efficient combustion. By leaving the head OEM in the ports the roughness creates turbulence and keep the air and fuel mixed together and in turn a bigger and better boom in the combustion chamber.

Now for a Cam, if you get that far, get a short duration, with a little more lift than stock, w/ 1.6 Rocker Ratio.
Contact CompCams Tech Line, tell them what you are going to do with the truck, what you have done to the engine and the rpm level you want to run in; even if it is street use, they wil know.

I am just thinking out loud, so take the info with a grain of salt.

Good Luck with the project.

Oh ya, did you get it running ?

old87ranger 04-04-2010 11:56 AM

nop the diaphram in the fuel pump blue pumped gas into the engine and seizing the engine up

Scrambler82 04-04-2010 01:13 PM

So what are you going to do ?

old87ranger 04-04-2010 07:28 PM

im in the process of pulling it out im taking it out in peices i took the intake off it was horrible bout to take heads off

Scrambler82 04-05-2010 07:56 AM

How far are you planning to go with the engine, rebuild (wise choice) either rebuild of the existing heads or look for a pair of the Explorer Heads, maybe cam (if used heads you need new guides, refacing of the valve seat minimum, refacing the head/block mating surface if needed, what will it be ?
The more you do, the it will cost YES BUT the less that will be a problem later on down the trail.

Another thought might be a short block or long block depending on how deep the pockets are.
The main thing will be a good running engine so before you decide on major mods like cam, intakes, headers and maybe new heads make a list of what you have, what you need and what you want and see where it comes out.
Things add up very fast and you can be part way through the project and run out of money, not good.

Do it right the first time !

old87ranger 04-05-2010 11:45 AM

well i no nothing till i can get the engine out and the oil pan off i got the heads off another horrior seen sluge lots of carbon head bolts wernt torqed down the rocker arms bolt was tighter then the head bolts

Scrambler82 04-05-2010 04:10 PM

Good Plan…
Good Luck on the project.

old87ranger 04-05-2010 08:19 PM

i got no clue on how this engine ran the rocker bolts were tighter then the head bolt wth were they thinking

Scrambler82 04-06-2010 02:11 AM

It is hard to say what was going on.
Did the pervious owners do any work on it or attempt any work, did they happen to mention work that had to be done; a lot of “ifs” ?
I think you mentioned gas filled cylinders… may have been a blown head gasket or an attempted head gasket replacement, who know !

Once you take it apart you will know how things stack up.
On an engine that you do not know about, you can bet on it, that it will be costly to rebuild and to do it right.
Might have been easier to find a low mileage 302/5.0L from a JY and use it instead, I am not trying to discourage you on this project,.
It can be done and with determination it will be done, just thinking out loud.

Thinking here… a 93 or older Mustang (maybe others) had an engine harness that was separate from the Vehicle harness and would make a great adapter harness IF you were to go that route.

Thinking too much, good luck on this project, good one, even if you decide not to complete it you will have gained some knowledge taking it apart.
