302 swap
302 swap
hi so I have a 99 ranger that I'm planning on doing a 302 swap in. I'm wondering if anyone know what kind of wiring problems I'll run into. I'm getting a complete running 2000 explorer with all harnesses. What wires do I need and will I have to repin any wires?
I can't tell you the wiring situation, all I can say it has been done a lot and shouldn't cause a lot of grief... and with the help from people like RonD, and as long as you are a reasonably decent mechanic, it should get done without a lot of hoop-la.
Yes, you will have to repin and/or splice some wires
Good read here on your specific swap 1998-2000 Rangers are the same: https://www.therangerstation.com/Mag..._v8_swap.shtml
Wiring can be year specific, Ford didn't change wire colors often but DID change wire colors, lol
This article has some wiring info: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...d_ranger.shtml
The engine wiring harness and V8 Computer will of course match up, its the interface for the 12v and ground you need to address and the PATS and dash wiring
Since you have a "running" Explorer then you have at least one working PATS key which you need to get engine started after the swap, and then you can either get the PATS reprogrammed for your Ranger PATS keys or swap over ignition for explorer key, door locks will still be Ranger key
The explorer used 4WABS system for speedometer, 1999 Ranger used the GEM module, so you will need to repin or splice pin 58 on the computer, grey/black wire, to the Rangers speed system, it also uses grey/black wire, found on pin 1 of GEM module or pin 1 on instrument cluster, "tap" either of these wires and run to pin 58 of computer
Not needed for starting or driving but will set code P0500 and transmission won't shift smoothly with no speed signal, assuming automatic trans
