306 swap

Im looking to do a 306 swap into my 2000 ford ranger 4x4. i have the tko 500 5 speed transmission and 306 already picked out for the build. do i need to mess with the transfer case at all so that the 4x4 will work properly with the 306 or should i be good to go without replacing it?

What transfer case are you planning on using? I'll assume one from a 5.0 Explorer which would be fine, but I don't believe your 4.0 one will work.

Somebody else will havta chime in here since your goin 5spd and I did mine with auto.

The truck has a 3.0 in it currently. I'm not familiar with transfer cases at all so I wanted to get some input on what I should be looking for.

The Ranger uses a Borg Warner 1354 Transfer Case. The Explorer/F-150 uses a Borg Warner 4405 Part-Time Transfer Case.

The torque of a 306 will destroy the 1354 fairly quick.

Yes there are a few things needed here

Best to find a transmission that came with a 4WD tail shaft setup, and get trans/transfer case as one unit.

Adapters are available for SOME transmissions, so find out which ones and for which transfer cases

Yes, V8 power would mean Ranger drive train should be changed, 8.8" rear axle would be needed
