5.0l is 19" wide, 21" high
4.6l SOHC is 28" wide, 26" high
4.6l DOHC is 30" wide, 30" high
length is about the same for all 3
Ranger engine bay would need a good bit of modification to get a 4.6l in.
And a body lift for height
As far as a manual trans, the 1997 and up F-150 with 4.2l V6 will have the M5OD-R2 with same bellhousing pattern as 5.0l, ford small block pattern, bolt holes need to be enlarged, 4.2l used 10mm bolts, 5.0l 7/16th(11mm) so not much difference
And the shifter on this trans was moved backwards in '97 so is within an inch of Ranger M5OD-R1.
4.6l uses Ford Modular V8 pattern so those trans only match other modular V8 patterns not 5.0l.
Ford computers have software for manual trans setup or Automatic setup, a computer setup for automatic will set trouble codes if it is not connected to correct model transmission.
You can have software changed or use computer from manual vehicle

Ya i dont want a 4.6. I got a 5.0. I just wondered if that m50d-r2 would bolt up to the 5.0 and how far off the shifter would be. I wouldnt mind building another 5.0 ranger but have a standard. I got another mountaineer that runs and goes with a 5.0 in it. So at some point im gonna buildme another v8 ranger.

The 4x4 M5OD-R2 from a 4.2L F150 bolts right up to the 5.0/5.8 block after the metric holes in the bell have been clearanced slightly - a very simple 2-minute mod. Overall length of the 4x4 R2 is similar to the AWD 4R70W. Shifter position is so close to stock Ranger that it is a non issue.
11" clutch and starter should be compatible with 96 5.0 F150 or equivalent. 164T flywheel should be 50 oz imbalance for Explorer 5.0. Explorer auto starter will not work with this manual swap. Block plate can be from 96 F150 or 70's Boss 302 or equivalent. Internal slave cylinder is the same part as later Rangers.
