I'd try to find out if the frame can handle all that power, it won't hurt to beef it up a little anyway. Do you have a 7.5 or 8.8 in the rear?

Check out this thread over on RPS:
http://www.rangerpowersports.com/for...d.php?t=164909

A guy by the name of "my984.6" has a '98 4x4 Ranger with a 4.6 sohc in it. He talks a little bit about what he had to do to make it happen (he comes in on page two).

The frame and suspension will be fine. You won't have problems with them because of the power. Now, as for the tires. That's a different story!

sounds good. ive always thought about going that route but ive got myself into more of the offroad. most of the new gen swap guys actually are running 4x4 or awd. which is perty cool. if you can beef it up enough to do some awd pulls thats where its at

Actually, once both engines are dressed, the difference doesn't look as big. Fully dressed the dohc 4.6 doesn't get much bigger than the stripped long block shown in the picture. The intake is low, the oil pan is shallow, and the exhaust doesn't extend past the valve cover tips. The 5.0 on the other hand gets bigger with every thing you add to it.

They are huge! But they blow a 5.0 away! Especially with a little work. Cost a bit more though!
