Do you want a 5.4 in your Ranger or do you want a V8 in it?

If you want a V8 then by all means go with the Explorer 5.0 setup. It's been done many times and is a proven dependable swap.

If you want a 5.4 then you're going to have to ask yourself a bunch of questions.

Do you have the skills to do the swap? Can you design and fabricate your own parts? Can you weld? Can you do wiring?

Do you have the time to do the swap? With the three mod swaps (garage swaps) I know of the average time to do the swap is over a year. Your's would be the first 5.4 Ranger 4x4 so you'd be breaking new ground.

What's your budget? The more time and ability you have the less a swap will cost you. All of the mod motor into Ranger swaps (again, garage swaps) have been pretty inexpensive.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. We'll help out as much as possible.

see one reason i wanted to do the 5.4 is cause the only one i seen was the one with the lightning enging in a little 2wd i wanted to have something nobody else has so mine would be one of a kind. but i might just go with the 5.0 swap cause this is my personal truck that i use daily so the 5.0 i can get swapped out quick and with out to much trouble.

in my opinion the 302/351 are way better then the new Tritons. The tritons got the power, but their not that fast. plus the 302/351W have alot more history behind them, the mustangs, F-series, crown vics, ect. but on the other hand the Tritons are newer, and not manny ppl that i know bother to put them in rangers. So if you want to be difrent, by all means put a Triton 5.4 in it. Or if you want to go Old Skool id find a 302 out of a late 60s mustang and put down in it.

I disagree with dragon wolf a bit. I love 5.0s. But I think that the Triton motors are some of the best motors ever built. They can be made to get much more power, are more efficent, and last forever. A stock 4.6 mustang will beat a stock 5.0 mustang.

Yeah, but the DOHC 4.6 is even more powerful back then in 94-95. He was planning on using a DOHC.

My 96 Mustang GT would whoop my 95 GT.

That depends on how it's built, and mostly how it's drove. I have heard a range of 18-25.

youd have to get it out of an olderish Triton, or a mustang. But if it was mine Id change it over in a heart beat.

Yeah, I think so. It is more work and effort. But look what you get over all. I know of 5 of them that are done. One was a complete hack, the other was Ford. I did mine, Greg did his, and I know of one more that was done nice, in that 4x4.

There was also a yellow Ranger 4x4 with a Mustang 4.6 that was done up as a show truck. It was built by a professional shop for the SEMA show. The guages didn't work and the trans wouldn't work right either. Looked pretty good though.

I think I figured out the key to a successful mod swap...snow! Look where they've been built. Two in Minnesota, and if you count the one Ford did, two in Michigan. Maybe you have to have snow on the ground for at least four months out of the year to swap a 4.6 or 5.4 into a Ranger?
