4R70W Problems

Hey guys.
I am in the testing phase of my V8 swap. I was driving it around, wouldn't shift into 4th (I think). It would just slow down hard (like you shifted into first) around 80km/h, but if I pressed the O/D off button it would be normal again because it would shift into what I assumed was 3rd. Checked the fluid...way low (worked its way into the lines, cooler, etc) so I filled it up. Ran, repeat, filled.

Then I drive it again and it was acting like it was overfull (because it was) once and awhile it was like there was air bubbles because it would push fluid out of the breather tube. Then it would be good. Then it would do it again. So I drove around some more and it still won't shift. I put it in 2 and it is no different than D, so it seems like it won't shift to third now

Drained some out.

So I think that the fluid is around normal level. Its hard to tell with a wet dipstick and clearish fluid. But still...won't shift into 3rd. At 80km's its around 3300 rpms. Way too high

I should say that my 4x4 lights flash (because I have a AWD tcase from an explorer so there is no indicators) and also switching from O/D on to O/D off does nothing.

Any suggestions? Please don't say it is blown. I have spent way too much time and money already on this

I had an issue like this. It was my wiring. I was using 1997 pin outs on a 2000 trans

Hmm. I have a 96 harness attached to a 96 trans with a 96 ECU. All taken from the same explorer

Fun fact. Drained some fluid. "bled" the tranny. Alright so fluid should be good to go.

Take it for a drive...still no third or fourth. Eff...

Alright turn it around...put it in reverse...back up...put it in drive...nothing...put it in second...nothing. Put it in first....REVERSE!!! ....wtf?

So in conclusion right now

R-reverse
D-nothing
2-nothing
1-reverse

No grinding or anything

Long shot.....

I had a 95 F250 powerstroke automatic that I put a hurst V-matic shifter in vs the column shifter. I had to modify the shifter arm on the trans to accept the shorter throw between gears. I was having weird issues just like this. What had happened was the throw of the shift was off and the trans was between gears.

This pertains to you in the idea that your shift cable/column might be worn out or the routing of the cable might be off and causing it to go between gears

Hmm...I hope it is something like that. I have dumped way too much time and money into this truck. I can't afford a new tranny haha. A simple fix is exactly what I am looking for

I know that feeling, I got lucky that I caught my wiring miss match when I started having issues
