power window relay
power window relay
This isn't an engine question but I'm hoping ron d. sees this, you seem pretty smart on this stuff. I'm getting together the parts needed to switch my manual windows on ranger to power. do u know on my 98, cant find my owners manual, where the power relay might be located either under hood or on side of dash? I have been told and saw sme utube stuff that the amps needed to run the motors makes the relay necessary. my end setup may not be factory but I want it to work right. I was told I can run it to a spare fuse? I should have taken the parts from 5.0 donor but didn't...my loss..lol...any help would be appreciated
If your truck does not have power windows currently you will not find a relay for them you will only find an empty socket or sockets for one or multiple relays.
If your wanting to add power windows I highly suggest getting a factory manual with wiring diagrams.
Alldata is a good source for the information you need.
A less complicated install would be installing a aftermarket kit yet it would be more costly

There was no Power window relay on the 1998, accessory delay relay is used but that was to allow you to roll up windows after key was off
GEM(module) was primary control for power windows, which you can skip if you don't need the "one touch" up or down option
I would still add a fused relay for window power, which cuts power when key is off
Diagram below for 1998 power window wiring
Power window wiring looks more complicated than it is, lol.
Window motor is a DC motor with 2 wires, lets say there is a Red wire and a white wire
If you put 12volt on Red wire and Ground the White wire, motor turns clockwise, if you reverse that, Red wire is ground, white wire is 12volts then motor turns Counter Clockwise, so window up or window down, depending on which way the motor turns
The switches are Double Pole, so each switch has 12v and Ground, when you press switch one way then Red = 12v,White = Ground, press it the other way and Red = Ground, White = 12v
So you just need to supply each switch with 12volts and a Ground, see wiring diagram.
The switches are already setup to do what they do
The Tan/light blue wire, #3 on master switch would just connect to Red motor wire in that diagram to skip the "one touch" and GEM
You would need a different GEM if you wanted to keep "one touch", one that came from a Ranger with stock power windows

I'm gathering stuff for change to power windows, got a decent idea of what to do. my laptop wont open ur diagram? I have a diagram book but its greek to me..lol. got cody777 site for thread to do it..ty
Ok, I read ur post and get what ur saying. dumb question, if I put both regulators in and wire driver side switches but not pass side would driver switch for pass window work that side or do both sides need to be wired?
You need all the wires, for both windows to work
Ford makes thousands of vehicles with powered windows each year, if they can eliminate a wire they will FOR SURE, lol, saves them big $$$
So all wires are needed

Thanks, I actually didn't do pass side yet. I started on driver door, figured id get it going then do pass side...it works now, I 4got to put fuse in the add a line block. tomorrow ill do pass side then put panels back on door.
