302 engine question

Alright so here's the deal...
I have a 5.0 out of an 1982 mustang and I stripped it down, punched it .040 over and baught tons of parts for it. Now I can build motors all day long but I ran into a problem and I'm reaching out to see if someone can give me some help. Now I have the short block complete with the exception of the oil pump. When I got the motor it have a brand spanking new oil pump so I'm gunna reuse it. Now when I took it apart I didn't take note on how the oil pump driveshaft was positioned. Now I can't figure out how it works. It goes in the oil pump but on the other end it goes up towards the front of the cam. Now I'm looking at it and its hex shaped and I don't understand and it turns to turn the oil pump. Is there some kind of drive gear that goes on the end of that little driveshaft. This build came to a complete halt and its such a little problem. Any help would be great... Thanks in advance

The 289 I tore down several years ago was similar. the hex bar goes inside the distributor. The cam turns the gear on the dist, which turns the oil pump.

Atleast thats how it was on my engine I had.

That actually make sense considering the position of the driveshaft. And from experience the 289 and the 302 ate almost twin engines so that will probably be what it is
