Thanks

any 99-01 explorer 5.0 awd will work. you can use the 2wd version but you will have to buy the advanced adapter kit(this enables you to change out the necessary parts on the transmission for 4wd apps so the transmission can bolt up to your borg warner t/c). that is if your truck is 4x4. you can also do t/c swaps but thats for other guys to help you with. if your truck is a 2wd then pretty much all youll need is the 2wd 5.0/tranny and explorer rear drive shaft.

now you are talking about custom crap now... all the stuff you are talking about will either need a tuner, wiring done and custom driveshafts. yes you can use all the stuff from a 96-97 into your 99 but youll have to do something about your fuel system and recheck all the wiring because that type of swap is not plug and play like mine was.

If your truck is a 98, then you dont have PATS. The 96 to 97 will work perfectly because as you already know, they do not have pats as well. I am 99% certain that the expo tranny will bolt right up to your existing t-case. But if I were you, I would look for a manual BW1356 instead of the AWD unit that will come with it.
What ever you do, get a whole donor Expo. It will make things 10 times easier

The 5.0 Explorer's 4R70W AWD extension housing will not bolt up to any Ranger transfer case. Advance Adapters sells a custom extension housing, output shaft adapter and AOD->4R70W oiling conversion that will mate the AWD 4R70W to the Ranger t-case. The tab for those parts is about $600.

For a 98~2000 Ranger, the best electrical match is 99~2001 Explorer. As discussed above, PATS would need to be added to your 98. The Type B PATS components in the Explorer are not that big of a deal to install but may require a dealer tool to initialize.
It is possible to use a M5ODR2 manual trans, a BW4406 manual case, t-case shift linkage and front driveshaft, all from a 97~2003 4.2L F150. A custom length rear driveshaft is required and the tcase will be very close to the driver side frame rail. The engine/trans/tcase can be moved over about 3/8" to the passenger side to give a little more room. The M5ODR2 from the 96-back 4.9/5.0 F150 has a forward shifter position that will put the stub under the dash in a Ranger.
