Have you looked at a 3.9L V8? There is so much junk hanging down in front that it would be reeeeaal hard to get everything to clear. The oil pan, for lack of a better description, looks like it's a cast aluminum front sump design. The bottum half of 3.9 looks like an engine swapper's nightmare. Of course, this info is based on pictures of the 3.9, what I know about swapping a V8 into a Ranger, and other discussions about this swap.

I'm not saying it can't be done (heard that enough with my swap) but....

your truck has to be a rocket.

Not to start this debate again but after I think one of my future car projects will be an LSx engine into a first gen ranger swap. Best of both world, Great GM horsepower, fuel economy, T-56 kickassness, and cool first gen ruggedness! But then again you said easiest so I will back up the 5.0 explorer drivetrain. But If you already have a 4.0 look at the real numbers first because to me it is a lot of work for the minimal gain. You could put some performance goodies in the 4.0 and far exceed a stock 5.0 motor for less money IMO.

This whole thread doesn't make sense.
We need to know what the end goal of the truck is. Most of the time when swaps are considered it's for a bigger engine, but if the OP just blew his motor and simply wants a driver again, then go with whatever you had.
Give us more to go with. The questions "What can I swap into a Ranger?" is just too damn open ended. And IMO, if your looking to do a swap, and your worried about time, don't do it.

They won't if his swap law is Identical to mine. The 5.4 in a ranger in my state as of next month is considered "Track use only" which is B.S. in my book. The Highest he can go would be 5.0 and since he has to stay with an 03 or newer the 4.6 Dohc would be his best choice IMO. PS. the emissions law is about all I know concerning a ranger v8 swap considering I never got the chance to do a Ranger swap. I've done 4 V8 swaps in Dimers but never one in a ranger.

That might be but I just don't think it would be practical is all. You already have a V6 in most of them or in some cases and I4. why pull out a V6 for another V6? or an I4 for another I4. This is V8 Tech section. That is what he was asking. You're in the wrong place for those engines my friend. Ps. Nothing against import engines or anything but he was asking what V8 swap would be better for his Ranger and gave us no details.

I have the 3.0, I would love to have purchased the 2.3 instead (just because it is dohc and inline)
Big Turbo + little motor = insane efficiency
my 2.0 4g63 gets me 29mpg on the highway, and an average of 24mpg if I drive sanely. This is after I tuned it myself and scored 381 awhp & 368 trq. And that is only on the stock turbo.
my 3.0 gets me about 23 mpg if I am lucky, and it has what, about 130 rwhp, maybe 150trq.
Plus the EJ25 & Sr20 are both front/back mounts.

Thats alot of power for a little truck.
The older 1GG-TE would probably work better and fit easier too. Those straight 6's are very long. The 1GG is a 2.0 I6. My dream car is an 84-87 Toyota Corolla with a 1GG swap.

I have always been a RX7 guy myself. Hell I had a 1993 TT but I had to sell it. I almost bought a Supra but they are too heavy. I would have had to spend a lot of money to get a Supra to turn. My RX7 already handled like a go cart. I still wish I got the Supra. RX7s are a pain to work on and the Rotary engine is too delicate.

now I understand "fd" driver
the 13brew is not delicate, you just have to make sure not to induce detonation.
I don't want to rape this guy's thread though. sorry for the distraction.
