03 Ford Ranger OEM Radio unit - Repair or Replace?
03 Ford Ranger OEM Radio unit - Repair or Replace?
Hey 2020, stop messing around with my Ranger!
Radio I currently have needs $325 to repair CD player, display and some buttons. I’m already in $70 from buying and shipping it to the repair place. ShortCircuitRepair.com if anyone’s familiar with it. I’ve already tried two other radios since mine but the dust at the end of September. Truck’s electronics and wires have been checked out by my local auto shop. I strongly want to keep it all Ranger parts but I’ve run out of places to find the original part in stock and tired of having a gap in the truck.
Stuck in analysis paralysis of what to do, spend money to get it fixed or buy another one and hope it’s not another dud. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

First, the Rangers do not have a "Ranger specific" radio. The same radios from each year, and several years are used across the Ford line, depending on the model upgrades.
You do not state which radio you original is, but from your description, it's am/fm single cd player. It should have the quick removal type front using two curved radio removal tools.
If thats the case, than numerous factory units can be had form $75 to $200 depending on what the seller thinks it's worth. E-Bay has dozens of them listed, and it dosen't matter if its from a Ranger, F-150, Explorer, ect. They all use the same type plug.
Just look for one from a later model up to 2011 Ford. It should be a simple plug n play.
Depending on your radio, it may have one or two plugs in the back. One plug, the main, powers the radio, light, speakers. If it has a second plug, that would power an amp, power ant, ect. You can use any radio that has the same slip in type chassis as yours, even if the year is different.
I have a base 2009 Ranger that had an am/fm radio, Bought a Ford am/fm cd player from a seller on e-bay, from a 2006 Ford Explorer that was in new condition for $125. You just have to do your homework as to what the back of your radio looks like, and weather 1 or 2 plugs.
My base Ranger only had the one plug, and the radio I bought had outlets for 2 plugs. I just used the one plug that powered the radio.
It actually took longer for me to type this than it did to remove my old radio and put the new one in.
No way would I spend $325 to repair an old radio. For that, you can get a new aftermarket head unit, 4 speakers, and have money left over. The repair shop just saw you as someone who had to have the OE radio fixed. Their screwing you badly.
Example, go to e-bay and punch up item 264901727483...

+1 ^^^
Welcome to the forum
OEM Radios of all types are available on Ebay
Also try car-part.com
This site searches local wrecking yards for used parts of all types including radio/cd players
There were at least 2 and maybe 3 radio options in 2003
Basic unit will just have one 16 pin connector on the back
Premium unit will have one 16 pin and one 8 pin connector, so two connectors, and it will also have a separate amplifier for speakers AND a subwoofer
Have a look here at the 2003 Ranger Brochure: https://www.therangerstation.com/res...r_brochure.pdf
Looks like there were 4 radio options, 5 if you count NO radio at all, lol

Yup Ron, that's what I was trying to remember to tell the OP.
If you buy an up graded radio, and it has the 2 plug inlets, but your Ranger only has one, yours will be the 16 pin plug. All the radios will have at least the 16 pin plug ...you would just leave the 8 pin inlet empty.
I believe all the Ford radios will have the 2 inlet ports EXCEPT the base model radio...am/fm only which only has the one 16 pin inlet. Those were the radios installed in the base model XL.

The single or 6 disc CD also came in one 16pin but also in premium with separate amp and 2 connectors
This is 6 disc but just 16pin: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Ford-Escape-...sAAOSwEOhfg225
And this has the 2 connectors: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/2001-2003-Fo...wAAOSwHvVfH4dd

I have one out of my 2003 that I'd be willing to part with. It is the single cd player with the cassette. Radio and CD player worked. I'm not sure about the cassette though as I didn't try it, prior to removing it.

I know it's an easy install just don't have the original radio anymore to check. It was a one CD disc model and probably basic unit with 16 pins from Ron's post.
Yeah I did the math and there are zero pros and several cons to repairing the old one. Still, there was a chance the quote would've been at the lower $100-$200 end.
