2 ohm and 4 ohm?

Can i hook up a 4 ohm speaker to a 2 ohm amp? quick response needed please.

2003stealthedge Feb 17, 2007 06:38 PM

what kind of amp is it cuz an amp can be wired many different ways

kevin1993 Feb 17, 2007 06:56 PM

its a pyramid 400 watt 2way 2 ohm...
i read a little more about it and they say that u can hook up a 4 ohm speaker to a 2 ohm amp and it will have distortion earlier when u turn it up loud but but a 4 ohm amp and a 2 ohm speaker could fry your amp.

anthony84_2004 Feb 17, 2007 07:55 PM

yes you can hook it up, your amp will not push its max, but it will work.

the speaker will see half the amps output

double the ohm load to the amp, halves the power to the speaker

I see.. thanks guys
Sounds like im gonna buy a new amp.

if you have a dual voice coil sub, then a 2 ohm amp is what you want.....when you wire them positive on the amp to positive on the speaker and then positive to positive on the speaker; nevative on the amp to negative on the speaker to negative on the speaker, you are pulling a 2 ohm load from the amp.........ALL amps push out more power at 2 ohms than at 4 ohms.....you can get more power that way cheaper......

here is a little wiring diagram on what i was saying if it was confusing....

and here is a link to were you can try different setups...

the sub i have is a 07 10" Kicker CompVT and i has a 4 layer voice coil.

lifted97ranger Feb 18, 2007 12:01 PM

is it a dual voice coil or a single voice coil?

kevin1993 Feb 20, 2007 10:08 AM

its a single

lifted97ranger Feb 20, 2007 10:24 AM

yea the amp would be only pushing out about 1/2 the power that it would normally do with a 2 ohm load on the amp....

Bhavesh Feb 21, 2007 10:27 PM

is it a 2 channel amp that can bridge to 4ohm mono? if so, then you don't have to buy a better amp

(although I would anyways because pyramids are usually pos)
