Sub Box Progress Pics

I haven't started any building but I thought I'd post the drawing and the dimesions I will be using in making my new sub box. I'm placing it behind the passenger seat and it won't go over the hump along the middle of the floor in the back. The jumpseat behind the driver should still be completely functionable.

It will be a sealed box with 3 JL w1v2 4ohm subs :icon16: ... Here's the link for the subs:

After doing all the calculations, The box volume will be fairly large. I will be using 3/4" MDF board, so by taking off 1.5" on each dimension, the volume inside the box comes out to:
5388.125 cubic inches
or
3.118 cubic feet

My target volume is only 1.875 cubic feet... Can I just seal extra wood inside the box in un-used areas to lower the volume? I can't change the dimensions of the box around too much without giving up leg room for the other jump seat or going above the window.

I appreciate any help

EDIT: I started building the box the other day and here's where I got to...

I need to put some bracing on the inside of it, fill it up a little still with prob just some 2x4's... then put the back piece on, wire it, and carpet it. Hopefully when my new amp comes in next weekend I'll have it ready!

can't wait to see how it will look...

yeah, one of the easiest ways is to add blocks of wood like 2x4 (since each piece is big to start with).

are you taking air space for subwoofer air displacement in the box? that will take up some air space for you. and why are you running 3 subs? first they are not on the same plane. i would worry about cancellation second what is their resistance, and are you going to be able to use that with your amp?

Snowboard101 03-22-2007 11:34 AM

I'm running three subs for well, more bass... One guy over at RPS recommended that I just keep the 2 subs on the same plane and port then rather than put the third in. I know that would be just as loud, if not louder, but I was hopin for good SQ as well. I wasn't sure if it mattered that I have all the subs on the same plane or not...

I'm not sure what the subwoofer air displacement is, is it on the link above in the first post?

There resistance is 4.086 ohms.

I'll prob buy another amp if this one can't suffice. I have an Alpine amp that says 700W but I think it only spits out 350W. I can get more details on that later...

Keep in mind this is my first box, so my ideas could be terrible... thanks for the insight so far guys

well it is all about learning, we all start somewhere. i agree with the guy from RPS, i would say cut it down to 2 subs and have the subs and port on the same plane, or maybe the port facing up. check out www.splbassx.com/forums lots of good info and people over there.

Where can I buy some cheap carpet to cover my box? I checked home depot, walmart, and autozone. Autozone had the carpet roll I was looking for in the wrong color. Any other places I should look or links? (black carpet)

Several options. Wood inside. Significant bracing inside the box, to make the 3/4" MDF more rigid is another - you will need it with three subs. Another is to move the subs on the front to a diagonal pattern, but still nearly touching eachother. That will allow you to chop some height out.

As for cancellation, won't be an issue. You are working with air pressure inside a sealled vessel. They could point opposite directions and have no effect on cancellation. Poorly ported boxes or poorly setup cross over networks create cancelation.

Finally, make sure you need three woofers. The Ranger is a small cab volume. I had a single DVC Boston Acoustic Pro-Series 12" in a sealed 1.25cuft box in my Ranger and it POUNDED. Could bounce quarters on my dash. This was powered with a Sounstream 200watt amp. It was more than enough to give me a good headache after just a few songs. I couldn't even stand to be in it at full volume.

partsexpress.com, best buy, and walmart are all places that carpet can be had. never used the stuff from walmart, but the other 2 i have.
