JL's

my friend offered to give me his old system... 2 JL W0's with a 200 watt Alpine amp... not a very big system but it sounded alright in his cherokee.. but exactly how much louder is a system in a truck?... and ive never paid attention, but how much vibration is there on the outside of a 4dr ranger?

it depends on the truck and the setup. i have a real nice system and its real loud but unless your in the cab you cant really tell how loud it really is. the bass hits REAL hard and loud but the same goes for that as in the above statement. to me, the best way to determine how loud and clear a stereo is would be the distances in which the speakers are located in reflection to the driver/passenger. and to me most of the subs offered by jl arent that loud to begin with. i am not saying by any means that they arent good but just that they dont satisfy my bass needs at all. and by that i mean at one point i had 3 10w0 and when i traded and got 1 infinity kappa perfect 10 it beat all 3 in terms of loudness and clarity. all this of course is JMO

I know with my old ranger I could have it really bumpin with my w7 and not hear the bass out side the truck. But It is hard to say how it will sound in your truck. Every car is different.

jl's are really good, especially if it's gonna be your first system.. inside the cab, it will sound very nice. outside, like a few have mentioned, it won't be as loud, obviously (but who cares about the outside, you'll be inside when its playing). do you know what size w0's they are?? i got my first system when i was 15, it was 2 12w0's, powered by an older kenwood amp, they sounded great in my p.o.s. mitsubishi montero (the inside of that thing wasn't too much bigger than our ext. cabs, picture almost the size of a jeep maybe) anyhow, they'll sound good within, and you shouldnt have too much rattling at all from them.

I have 2 10Wo's in a downfiring box and they sound great. They are powered by a Rockford 300 watt amp and I'm pretty happy. They hit really hard when the windows are down. To me it seems that if you don't have a ported/vented box, then you need to increase the air space. I can tell a huge difference in the bass when the windows are up and when I open a door. They would be perfect for your first system. Maybe upgrade the amp with a rockford or a newer alpine.

Those JL subs have very low extension in PROPERLY tuned ported boxes, but If you want loud, go with a vented box and learn how to calculate our vehicles natural/resonance frequency.

The only rattle on my truck is the street scene mirrors and I am about to tighten them up so no problems there!
