Do any of you know what a capacitor does???
I'm gonna do this the quick way. Courtesy of www.CarAudioHelp.com

Power capacitors or Stiffening™ capacitors are used to assist an automobile that has a problem with dimming lights (voltage sag) or to help tighten up the bass. These capacitors store a large amount of power and then release it very quickly when the demand is the greatest from the amplifier. These capacitors release the current much faster than a battery can and do not force the amplifier's power supply to be at a loss when bass notes and other transients are greatest. Capacitors should be chosen in the ratio of one Farad per thousand watts. Click here to see how a power capacitor is wired in a car audio system.

Yeah, but they are reccomending batteries and alternators.... They won't help at all. A battery will just supply more amperage to run the system longer. The capacitor saves up for a big bass hit and releases the saved up energy when the amplifier needs it.
An alternator will just charge the batteries quicker.

an alternator will supply more current so the system dosent have to pull of the batteries
a cap will do no good really until you get into bigger ones
the 1 farad per 1k watts is BS in my opinion
adding an extra batt or bigger alt, or big 3 is the best electrical upgrades you can do, only thing with the word cap in it i would try is an Xstatic batcap(power of a battery with quickness of a cap)
a cap stores energy, lets say you have voltage problems with dimming, yopur electrical is having a hard time already supplying the system with voltage...
so you add a cap, cap does good for a while, then alot of bass comes and drains the cap, yay, now the cap is dead and the system still wants the same power it was getting, but the alt now has to charge the cap back up too plus the other stuff that needs power, so your now in the hole farther

Yellow Top Optima, 2 Farrad Carbon Cell Cap w/ Digital read out and bigger alt, i have no voltage drop, i didnt have it with teh cap & stock battery and alt either, i just did the other 2 as a precaution because i didnt want to get stuck on the side of the road because my alt was burnt out from trying to keep up with the demand

well thats a damn good price for a 5 farad Cap you got it at about 10% of what it should cost retail, so congrats. But Bama Boy is right a cap will help out with the diming problem on bass hits, but you still need a bigger alternator if you have a large system that drawing huge amounts of power.
If you have a huge system that thumps like the dickens , then a yellow top is a must have. Vibration is the #2 killer of SLI batteries second to heat. Up in MD you can probably go a good 4-5 years on a regualr battery in a DD, but with added draw and darin and vibration your gonna go through that same battery in about 2 years.
Caps do serve a purpose, but they are mostly a show item in my opinion. For the normal retail price of a 2.5 or 3 farad cap ( minimum needed to provide any difference) you can replace your battery and alternator and solve the same problem and many others before hand. Use the money you saved on the other two things

I try to educate the teens at my work on this all the time..
guy is trying to run a 2000watt class d amp with a stock 70amp(?) neon alternator..
him: "Hey I just bought this 3farad cap for 100$ my S*** will pound now right"
me: "still stock alternator right?"
Him: "why do I need a new alternator with this cap"
Me: "www.howthingswork.com"

I say go with a yellow top optima and a high output alt from bob. Then you will
be rollin HOT!
But for the price, Not bad at all!

ok well like i said. I have no dimming problem. the only thing that dims is my dome light inside my truck at idel. and thats just a little bit. My cousin did say if i wanted to, i can get a new battery but i didnt need an alt. The one in the truck is big enough. Im taking a word from a 10 time winner. But I understand what ya guys are saying. Yeah i won the cap off ebay.

Fletch...
I'd say what your doing is good... Simple use of elimination to solve your problems. When I had my honda, that's what I did. I first upgraded to a capacitor, noticed a small change, then I went ahead and upgraded to a yellow top, which helped more. Lastly I replaced the alternator with a H.O. one and noticed a difference there also. My main goal was to not have a huge voltage drop/dimming problem throughout the whole system.
Good job.
