blown speakers?
 

i just installed my new pioneer head unit and love it. my first time i had it on i think i might of turned it up to loud and blown out the door speakers. how can i tell if they are blown? if i did any suggestions on speakers that i could get 4 for around 100-120. they have to be from crutchfield so i can get some money off.

I did my first audio upgrade in mine simple and inexpensive. Go to bestbuy and get the pioneer 6x8 set for like $50. that will upgrade your speakers to two way and give better sound. I have pioneer head unit with four 6x8 two way, two tweeters, and two dual 12s in bandpass box. Sounds great!

make sure if you do not want to cut wires to pick up some speaker wiring harness. I did my own since I know how. Gotta love some pliers and slide connectors. spent like $8 instead of the $14.99 per set.

Well on his door speakers and the ones behind the seats are 5x7. Not 6x8. I have 4 clarions and they sound really good. But I also have them going off an amp not the head unit.

My 86 and my 06 both had 6x8 so I figured his would have also. Either way can get a good pair around $50

Also to answer your first question, the easiest way to tell will be to take the door panel or pillar off and actually look at the woofer. Remember that if you check one and it is not blown this does not mean another on will not be. It is possible that your stock head unit actually blew your speakers due to poor sound quality and you just couldn't tell until you put in the aftermarket HU. Even if none of the speakers are blow, almost any after market speakers will be higher quality and sound better than stock. AND to clarify your speakers are all 6X8s (www.crutchfield.com) You can also use almost any other size however you will need to use adapters to make them fit correctly, I recommend getting a pair of 6.5s or 6.75s.

Well the stock ones are 5x7 and yes you can run the 6x8. Basically the same dang thing IMO.

i dont want to have to cut my door or get a special kick panel insert so biggest ill go is 6x8 in the doors. i found out that one of my wires had gotten disconnected as i fit the head unit in, fixed it today though.

Speakers usually do not blow right away, they usually let you know when they are being abused for a while then they die.
harsh popping noises tell you they are getting too much power. scratchy sounds are from a blown coil, the same with no output.

sometimes its just your settings that distort them so badly that you believe they are blown. to much bass boost, eq or improper crossover settings will make them sound terrible.
