a few questions for the sub masters on here...
so right now i'm running a single 10" jl sub(i don't wanna hear the JL rants lol)
it sounds great but i'm getting bored with it lol
how does 2 8's compare to the single 10? as far as overall sound? i don't want the loud boom effect just sq!( i'm already fully dynamatted and running focal access 165's)
obviously i'd be downfiring them,
and anyone use/have any input on the cdt audio subs??? i've done some research they look pretty good at least to me haha.
i'll be honest i love my jl's but looking to branch out and experiment some!
anyways lol....just want some opinions to ponder over :)

what size box are you running, ported or sealed, what jl specifically? bass boost on? what is your low pass frequency set at? whats your highpass set to? are you running a subsonic filter, whats it set at? how much power do you have on it? Many factors can cause boomy bass. most are fixable.
for instance, if you're running a large volume ported box the sound can be more boomy then a small sealed box.
if your crossovers are overlapped or you aren't running a highpass filter on your mids then the sound can get muddy.
if your bass boost is on, that can cause boomy sound.
etc. etc.
8's will usually be able to reach up higher into the mid-bass range.

Its the jl "party pack" lol. Pretty basic 200 watt with the tma 250 watt amp. I want to say its a .60 cubic foot box(sealed)
I'm using the alpine IDA-X305 head unit. This is what I have it all set at:
Bass- Fo= 60HZ, Q= 1.5. Boost set at 5
Treble- Fo= 12.5 boost at 7
High pass- 120HZ
It is very clean but just getting bored and want to try something different haha

set treble and bass controls back to 0.. you really shouldn't need to boost any frequency that much. +2 or 3 should be your maximum. readjust your sub gain a bit lower to matchup with your fronts. then turn overall volume up a few notches. - should sound better and produce more highs.
those are your setting for the Headunit. what are your amps settings? Input sensitivity, Lowpass & Boost..
according to your EQ settings you are experiencing a lack of highs. and boosting the bass too much.
either that, or you have too much midrange. which could be caused by an overlap in your crossovers.
if your lacking highs,I'm guessing your fronts aren't power by an external amp which is causing the need to drastically boost the treble to provide the speakers with enough power to keep up with the subwoofer.
Likely you need to turn your sub gain down, bass boost down, and turn overall volume up.
If things are correctly set and powered you will need much less eq to fix the sonic holes in your system. When you have a dip in your system response you are lacking 2nd or 3rd harmonics which will cause the 1st harmonic to sound muddy or boomy.
your sub shouldn't sound boomy something is causing that.

lol i know my sytem has its faults but really it does sound great
once again just looking to change things up and learn!
i do not have an amp running the speakers so i do know i will be doing that once i find a good sub setup. i figure i'll use the amp im running the 10 off of for the speakers and get a new amp for the new sub(s)
i've had my tax refund hidden away from last year for some fun money and this is where i think it's gonna go! lol
once again any input on cdt audio??
or should i go with sundown?
also i demo'd one of the 13.5" shallow mount jl subs in a downfire box in my buddies fiddy and it really sounded good but still more BOOM than what im looking for. my loud low end days are in the past haha. i'm looking more for solid low and exceptional mids. the focal 165's do great on mids and highs.
so sq wise what's going to be my best options/setup?

I don't think im explaining this well enough.
Before you go off an buy a new sub and amp, properly tune your settings on the amp and headunit.
Your settings are causing your system to sound boomy. not the actual sub...
why would you buy new equipment if all you need to do is turn a small dial? just saying.
just going to take a wild guess and say your bass boost is cranked up.
Bass boost usually boosts the 40-60hz range. -the range at which causes boomy sound. turn it down.

Haha I wasn't referring to you korey. I do change the highpass filter a lot depending on what I'm listening to.
As for what I listen to....everything haha. Mostly country but I have plenty of nickatina, kudi, old master p, biggie, etc. Not so much as far as rock goes.
So I'm wanting something that hits really precise. And to me it seems two 8's would be a better bet

Hm I'm not sure SA-8s would be ideal for you, they're higher excursion subs and I don't think I'd even put them in a sealed box to begin with. I know someone who swears by the RE 8's, I forget the model but they only make 8's in one size. He's got four of them in a sealed box in his dually. I don't like JL subs but their 8w3's are pretty nice too.

thanks man good info! yeah i'm over the ported setup lol. i had two 12's in the zx2.
so the re-8's sound like they're worth looking into then!
probably dumb question but...excursion? thats basically how pushing air correct? so in theory i'd be looking more for the shallow design subs?
and yeah everyone hates JL basically for the price only but they do sound awesome nobody seems to argue with that.

I dislike JL because they're too overpriced for what they are and people who don't know anything about car audio think everything JL is the hands down best lol.
Excursion is the subwoofers travel. Heres how much excursion the SA-8's have which is why IMO they're more of a ported enclosure sub.

haha fair enough. i have a buddy at cartoys that kinda hooked me up with the JL i have now(some guy had it in his truck 2 days and decided he wanted to go ported and 2 2 12's) so for $200 for the sub/amp/box i came out good lol.
i tried quite a few setups in my zx2. back then i was going for loud jbl owned lol. but i also really liked my 2 memphis 10's also so i might do some research on their 8's
unfortunately i won't be getting the deals from my buddy this time because all they have at carotys are JL, rockford, jbl, and infinity. so i'm kinda experimenting here haha.
