capacitor?????????

Yesterday I bought some audio equipment off of craigslist. an amp, 2 subs, tons of wire, some as thick as battery cable, and an Audiopipe CP 80, and a Stinger 1.0 Farad capacitor. What the hell are these? I've heard that they "store" power for the subs. ???????? Will I need these? The amp is an Audio Planet 2250 watt amp, and the subs are Audiobahn 10" 1000 watt subs. Am i going to need these capacitors?

Its an inline battery. When the sub hits hard the amp requires a lot of power. So in stead of dimming your lights it takes the power from the cap. Then the cap recharges.

Kinda what I thought. I know that the amp and subs are overkill for me, but I couldn't pass up the deal. Since I don't plan on listening to it at crazy levels, should I still have them installed?

If you've got it use it. Easier on the alternator instead of sudden pulls on it its a steady pull. If that makes sense.

^i agree. If you don't know, capasitors are just batteries that charge and discharge all the time. But what makes it different than a battery is that all the electricity it stores up shoots out all at once. I don't know much about audio systems, but that sounds about right to me.

LOL And you will have them turned up maybe not all the time but you will. Sooner or later they have a tenancy to get louder and louder and boom, "dam i need bigger subs."

So use them both? Or just one? If only one, which? Is one better than the other?

Probably just one on tens. Research them. Make your decision that way.

Do the big three before you install this stuff. It will make for a better power flow in your truck.

Caps are typically regarded as a band aid for inadequate wiring. If you got it, there is no reason to not use it. I got one.

The rule of thumb used to be 1 farad per 1000 watts rms, or somewhere near 1000.

As far as this amp is concerned you will need a 200 amp alt if you plan on using this thing often. It will drain you battery pretty fast if you don't. Even with the truck running.

Peak Current consumption, at rated power into 1 Ohm - 175 Amperes

This isn't a casual listing kind of amp. It falls into the realm of competition, aka DBDrag.

You will need to address your highs/mids with that much bass. It will way over power your stock stuff.

The term ghetto beats comes to mind.

Get a flux capacitor instead. Install it with some self sealing stem bolts.

Use both. Each capacitor is rated for 1 Farad. so that means you need the two of them to get asclose to your 2250 watt amp.

Run both, save your alt.

as far as what it does, you've basically got the idea;

basically a battery, but totally diffrent. It does 'store' energy but not like a battery, it can only store it if there is current running through it. And basically if you hit a really deep note with your subs and your amp is screaming 'I NEED MORE COWBELL' then the capacitor kicks it out and boots the amp in the a$$ and all is well.....

no that im rambling....look it up at this site:

http://dictionary.reference.com/

they give great definitions

I tried those. I didn't have a left handed screw driver to install them with, so I threw them in a bucket of steam.

I kinda figured it would be overkill, but for the price, i couldn't pass it up. I'm thinknig that I'll run the amp at it's lowest point, and adjust the door/back speakers to what I think sounds good. I'm running all infinity speakers, so maybe adding an amp to those?

yes add an amp to your speakers as well but make sure you have the amp set up for mids and highs only.

Maybe we use the term differently.

I'm referring to those that have a busted 80's whatever with 5k in audio. Most of which is bass. So the entire car is rattling.

Im running 60/40 split in power. 300 for mids/highs 400 for lows.

Any kind of music is pretty loud and well rounded. The highs on the say speed/death metal will make you bleed though.

Caps are a bandaid that actually cause more strain on your alt in the long run.

The guy thats doing the install says that since they are only 1 farod, they really won't do any good. He's going to install the system and see if the lights dim at all. I'm thinknig of selling them as well, just to make up some of the cash thats going into the install. What do these thigs go for anyway?

do the big 3 instead sell the cap and cut the wire to the approx length for each and say bye bye to the dimming period.

Well, got the amp and subs installed yesterday. No problems. Didn't need the capasitors after all. No light dimming at all. I have the ampturned way down, and it flows really good with my Infinity 6x8's. And the best part.........no rattles anywhere. I hate when some people have huge systems and all sorts of rattles. Thanks for all the hep fellas. Anybody need a capasitor???????
