Cheapo Stereo Question

how important is brand name when it comes to buying a stereo for ur car/truck when all you really want is for it to play music (stations), store those stations, and have a aux. jack in the front for your mp3 player? especially when u are not going to really upgrade your existing stock sound system, because u will wait for ur next vehicle??? how important?

because i found one at walmart for $80 that has not only an aux jack but also a sd slot and usb slot... made by Virtual Reality Sound

What do you mean by "no mp3" can not play mp3's or dosnt come with one? (just checkin)

i also might have an offer from a friend at work too for an alpine

RangerJustin 06-20-2007 07:40 PM

oops i meant no USB/memory card...

bdc217 06-20-2007 09:55 PM

oh lol thats cool, how did u like it? and whats making u sell it?

RangerJustin 06-20-2007 09:58 PM

worked perfect for me, had some nice alpines and an infinity basslink hooked up to it, was very nice. I traded my truck in so i put the stock stuff back in.

bdc217 06-21-2007 02:04 PM

i'll consider it and get back to u, thanks

Honestly, I'd take Justin's radio for $60. The Walmart radio probably won't have as much wattage to cover the speakers and will sound more distorted at higher volumes.

Sorry I haven't been around Bing, but take these guys' advice. The Walmart one will look good, but most likely not sound that good.

im just gonna say you might as well keep your stock cd player. as everyone else has said your sound quality will suffer. if you arent planning on keeping the ranger but plan on building a system in your next ride, why not just get a nice deck now. yes you will spend alot more money. but even with stock speakers, a nice deck will give you better sound.
my brother had purchased a $49 dual cd player from walmart to put in his 99 dodge ram extended cab.. he put a 10 inch kicker in there with a small amp. when i went home for christmas i took him my old subs and box from my ranger and we putit in the ram. he put a bigger amp in there. well we kept getting this resonating from the subs. to the point he could not listen to them. i took a set of rca's and ranthem from my truck(eclipse 8445) to the amp and it was like night and day. every bit of the resonating went away. my point is that in the long run it cost him more money because he had to go out and buy a better deck.

I would... only thing is my "stock radio" is just that, a radio... no cd player, not even a tape player, lol. and the display is cutting out

Thanks Matt. You do know that whatever I choose (most likely NOT WalMart) I am going to call on you to help me install it seeing as the only thing I know how to do is change oil, lol. :silly:

I've had one of those $80 VR units for a couple of months and it's working fine. I like to keep an audio book (Bible) on the SD card, so it always remembers where I left off after listening to another source. I keep a 4G USB drive on my keychain and change what's on it from time to time. I usually play that on "shuffle". The VR sounds great through my Mag8AT sub (annother bargain at $50 after rebate from Pep Boys a couple of years ago) So far no camplaints!

BuckyB 08-31-2007 04:10 PM

...err... I meant DUB8AT.

FMD 09-01-2007 07:40 AM

hmm they had memory cards now for headunits? thats cool as hell!

I been lookin forever for a DVD Head unit cheap that plays MP3's. CDs just dont hold enuff toons.... 180 songs on a cd aint enuff... tho if i could use like a 4gb SD card that would be fantastic!

Bumpncarstereo 09-01-2007 10:53 AM

i am actually surprised that dvd mp3 hu aren't more common. a lot of people have been looking for them for the past couple of years, there aren't that many, and they are expensive to boot.

Slvr Ranger 09-01-2007 12:20 PM

Remember that you get what you pay for with a head unit. The JVC has very good quality sound and they also make a unit with DVD, MP3, and aux. The model # is KD-AVX1, KD-AVX2. I have had one in my ranger for a year and a half and it is holding up very well. The JVC above for $60.00 is a pretty good deal as well.

ranger_banger 09-01-2007 12:35 PM

in this case. not really important at all. one of my skater buddies has that H/U and it works just fine for him. give it a shot.

Interceptor944 09-06-2007 07:14 AM

Had the same thing in my jeep. Worked great and loved the usb port. Only thing is yes it won't push much and the display cuts off the name of the song and dosn't scroll. Kind of odd when they made that but what can you say for 80 bucks....
