Icon10 New speakers suggestions

1996 Ford Ranger (duh) short bed
2.3L 4 cylinder

I don't know much about audio, but the speakers in my truck are going out. Can anyone suggest a good speaker set to go in my truck? I would like something that can play some semi-heavy bass, but it is not that important. Really not sure what my price ranger should be but defiantly under $200.

Thanks,
- Mike

I put Pioneer TS-G6843R speakers in mine but I'm helping them out with a sub. Crutchfield: LCD TV, Car Stereo, Home Theater, Speakers, Digital Cameras will give you some good options and toss in adapters for free.

...honestly though, there's probably someone near you in TX that would just about give you the factory speakers.

I've got 2 different sets of Kenwood 6x8's in my truck.

Got them a couple years apart at Crutchfield in the outlet section for half off.
Said they were open box, but the original box they came in was still factory sealed... go figure.
They handle about 80w-100w & I've been running them off 2 channels of my 4 channel amp (2ohm load) and they're seeing about 60w - 80w of real power.

Can't complain about the sound, especially for less than $50 a pair shipped.

My crossover is set to about 150hz, so they don't see much deep bass. But for mids/highs they're great.

When you buy make sure you can return them if you don’t like the sound.
The Store Sound and the Cab Sound can be two different things.

CYA, just in case.

I just replaced my interior speakers with these polk 5x7's, love everything about them.

POLK AUDIO DB571 5X7" 360W COAXIAL CAR SPEAKERS PAIR: eBay Motors (item 110559846988 end time Aug-13-10 1355 PDT)

I got them from this seller on ebay for 59.95 a pair shipped, csb electronics items - Get great deals on Car Stereo Without Navigation, Steering Wheel Controls items on eBay Stores! even when he didnt have something listed in his store, every time iv messaged him about something he usually had one in stock and would beat the lowest price on ebay with out haggling, couldn't beat that

x2 on the Alpines... had them in every vehicle I've had. Sound even 10x better with a 4 channel amp too.

Thanks again. I am making a list of all these.

Another question: I have read that oval speakers give better bass, but circular speakers sound better in general. Is there really that much of a difference?

my personal opinion is i like oval speakers theres not that much of a difference in then if you get 2 way or 3way 6x8s you can jus pop em right in your ranger no drilling cutting or anything and youll be impressed guarenteed i have 3 way 6x8s behind my seats and you can feel it pretty good of course it aint no sub but it works and i have 6x9s in my doors

I would think a bolt in setup would be nice.
What about wiring, do the new speakers require new Monster Cabling ?

not at all jus cut the stock plug off like an inch back so if u sell it take ur speakers out and put the stock ones back in and then put the female connectors on the wires and youll be rockin out in no time

id vote for infinity kappas, but it looks like they brought the price up on sonic so youd be over budget like $50 for 4 speakers

You live in Dallas Mike. There must be a thousand audio shops nearby. My suggestion.
Go to any one of them where they have a room you can listen to speakers in.
Go to several different shops that sell different brand of speakers so you can compare brands.
Don't go to a Wal-Mart or Best-Buy or something like that where they just have the speakers setting on a wall.
To much background noise. Listen to a bunch of different speakers in your price range and see what sounds good to YOU.
Then buy the ones YOU like best. Most speakers are a simple replacement for your stock speakers. No big deal to install.

Good luck.

Ya this is what everyone has been telling me. I go to school in Denton (45 mins north of Dallas). I just need to get over there some time.

Thanks, but I am kinda an audiophile so I would really like to hear the speakers before I buy them. If I ever get to the store I will give those a listen.

How do you weed through all of the audiophile data to come up with a good sounding speaker system that will fit OEM locations and include a small all in one bass/amp setup.
Maybe an amp for the four smaller speakers too.
New speaker wiring is no biggy either.

I am always totally confused in this area.

check out mobile audio forums like diyma.com look through the product reviews. if you have your eye on a set search for a review. if the review is sound like something you like put that on your list of speakers to listen to in the store. even then that's a totally different environment then the interior of the car. different equipment and many other variables.

there is a lot more people that like to test many different sets and write reviews, your kind of just getting a random list here.
