Its called a PA. you can get em from radio shack or CB stores. theyre usually like 15 bucks and you just plug it into a CB unit thats capable. usually theyll have a CB/PA switch on the front...

most CBs(the ones that ususaly cost 100$ or more) have a switch already on them and all you need to do is plug in a speaker, that you can get almost anywhere....

On my old vintange CB I bought a Y cable, a 3.5mm headphone jack into male RCA ends (plug into INPUT on CD player), plug it into my external speaker #2 output so I only hear my voice, even when not on PA.
Back of my old CB (new out of bax three months ago):

The Y-cable, great for MP3 players or for those who have an old tape with tapeplayer.

Almost every CB has that option, from 30$ - 100's of $......just go buy a pa speaker, plug it into the back and push pa...

check out Walcott CB, they're great for CB and related equipment, I buy most of my new stuff through them.

PA (Public Address) speakers -

And like said, Cobra is one of the best brands of CB equipment, but not the cheapest.

hmmm, sounds like your antenna just sucked. maybe you didnt adjust your squelch right either, but that doesnt make any sense even for a cheap CB.

I dont know about mountains. It works well below sea level... (I live in New Orleans) We go in alot of trees, if that helps. And it also has a pa switch. Can't say how it works, I dont have a pa. I mounted it in the little cubby under the a/c controle.

Agree'd 100%!

I can take a Cobra 19 and put a 102" whip on it and talk circles around a $400 radio on a 3 ft firestik..

The antenna is the most crucial part of your setup. Granted, you dont need a big whip to talk good, but a properly tuned antenna, will enhance your performance, and make it ALOT easier on your radio. High SWR results in HEAT... and HEAT is torture on electronic parts.

If you're in the market for a good radio, with some good features, I suggest a Cobra 25, or Uniden PC68.

I know there are guys on this forum that swear by Cobra... when in fact, Cobra is actually made by UNIDEN... Or they were... I have numerous Cobra's that have Uniden circuit boards in them.

Cobra 29 LTD Classic = Unicen PC78XL

Cobra 25 = Uniden PC68

Cobra 148 GTL = Uniden Grant XL (Which is the BEST in my opinion..)

Cobra 19 = (somewhat) Uniden Pro 510

Now I'm sure they will be those whom disagree, and that's fine.

But for you, I suggest a Cobra 25 or Uniden 68'. If you're going to be talking HEAVILY, get a Cobra 29, or if you're into the sideband scene, as I am, you won't go wrong with a Cobra 148 or Uniden Grant. I think 148's can be had NEW for around $130. However, it will be difficult to find a Uniden Grant XL.. if you do, be prepared to PAY for one.

If you dont intend on doing much talking, only for 4 wheeling trips, or just occasionally on the interstate, I reccomend the Midland 1001Z, A Cobra 19, or Uniden 510.

Just remember, your radio is only as good as your antenna. You can take an echo microphone, and a whip, and the guy you're talking to won't know you're on a "little radio" if you don't tell him.

4 watts, is 4 watts, whether it's coming out of a 19', or a $300 Galaxy.

Just make sure your radio is on frequency, and the modulation is not overkill, and you'll talk fine.
