My girlfriend has that Alpine headunit and I think it would be a better choice to spend a little more money and go with the Alpine CDA-9883

I like Pioneer and I have the 3900MP the one below the 4900, I would have gotten it but it did not have a front aux input, I personally think the Pioneer decks look better than the alpine's and kenwoods too

I'm bias, Pioneer all the way. If it's looks your after, go with the Pioneer. The Alpine looks like something from the early 90's.
Basically though, it's you're call.

I have this head unit and I love it! I can't say enough good things about it. After having Pioneer, sony and Kenwood, my Alpine is by far my favorite...

I think I might go with the Pioneer. Its has more power and it does look pretty sweet.

The one question I have is, its says on the spec page that the iPod has an "optional audio" does this still mean I can control which songs I play through my iPod? I just cant use the stereo to control it right?

Alpine without a doubt.

For your question, I think you're asking if you control your ipod by hand or through your headunit? If so, you control your ipod depending on the hookup you buy. You can get a chord that runs from the bottom connection jack of your ipod to the back of the headunit. In this case, you control the ipod with your headunit controls.

To control your ipod by hand, you get a chord that runs from the headphone jack on the ipod to your headunit, either on the front or back depending on its setup. You can get great sound quality either way.

Read the reviews on Crutchfields website. You'll find out a lot of info. and opinions of people who actually bought/own the head unit's you are looking at. I've been looking too. There will be a "reviews" tab on the page of each unit you are looking at.

I was going to go w/ Pioneer, but I'm mainly interested in adding Sirius radio, and their head unit's won't display two lines of info., like artist & song title simultaneously. I think that is ridiculous. Even on their head units that have 2 or 3 line displays, it won't display both, so I can't figure out if it's the head unit that won't do it, or the Sirius module that wont/can't send the info. Irritating. My plan is to wait 'til january and see what the new models offer.

For what it's worth, you can load your songs up on a thumb drive and a lot of units will connect via a cable (same as w/ an ipod/mp3 player), and the info. will be displayed on the head unit, and controlled via the head unit.

I've had both Pioneer and Alpine, and I was pretty pleased w/ both, so i'm no help there.

I would go with the Pioneer b/c it has the ability to grow with you later. Pioneer has three pre amps instead of two, and are 4 volts instead of 2, and is Satellite ready, and can control a changer. All of these things the Alpine doesn't do.

I'm still saying go with the Alpine 9883. Has all of the features the Pioneer has and I think the Alpine brand is more dependable.

man go with the alpine. i have the alpine 9883 and i love it. i have had a few different brand hu and this one is by far my fav. ipod controls through the radio, it looks good imo and there is no lag whatsoever with ipod controls. i just have it hooked up to my factory speakers for now(changing that this week hopefully) but even those sound pretty good. there are alot of settings that you can control to tweak the sound to your liking. good luck with the choosing

mike

EDIT: oh yea plus if you use the bluetooth on your cell, you can actually use the speakers in your car to have a conversation on your phone!

I've had my Pioneer 4900iB for about a year now. I love it. Plays my MP3 CD's with no problem and pushes my Pioneer 3 way door speakers nicely. I also have an amplifier and subwoofer and the controls are easy to adjust.

because alpine is better quality, well known across the globe, and one of the most trusted car audio companies on the market
