My overhead console mod with relocated display in rearview.

Looks like my original plan to mold in a small 6.5" monitor isnt going to work due to the small size of the console, i was thinking they were a lot wider, oh well i still decided to do at least something different with it.

Right now iv already managed to open up the console, remove the display and seperate it from the circuit board, iv opened my mirror and already have some paint stripper on the back to remove the protective paint first, im off to the store to find something with nitric acid in it, it will strip the actual silver from the mirror giving me a clear window for the display to show through,

This is sort of a hit or miss operation here as far as the wiring, but i dont see why it wont all work out.

Heres what iv gotten already

So im sitting here waiting for a spectacular chemical reaction to blow off the silver/copper backing of the mirror, its actually really slow and not that exciting, but for anyone whos curious you can use almost anything that contains nitric or muriatic acid, in my question asking and online findings apparently you can use almost anything that cleans a toilet, specific brands like CLR, Snowbowl and chlorox toilet cleaner were said to work and i can now vouch for the CLR, after about 5 minutes its already starting to thin the backing.

Just a hint there for anyone who might want to make some custom mirror turn signals

fyi muriatic acid is also found in tile and masonary supply sections in home improvement stores. Its used for cleaning up grout haze and cleaning off brick and mortar. might be stronger also.

Good diy project thought! we need more original mods like this.

Great idea! Since the 6.5 screen won't work... what else do you have in mind?

smaller screen? haha not sure just yet, i ended up destroying the first mirror, the tape i used to make a straight line absolutely refuses to keep the chemical from seeping under it, so i kept getting bigger... and bigger rough edges, i ended up using another mirror i have, i think it will work out better, the only thing iv really thought of other then the lcd is to utilize the buttons in the mirror for turning on and off my pc and maybe making a plexi window or something and illiuminate it with possibly the intel inside logo or something, just not sure yet.

Its actually an auto dimming mirror, i dont know what voltage exactly its saaaaafe at really but iv tested it at 1.5 and 3 volts and it works just fine, i have regulators for both, but it blacks out the mirror completely and i love the look, this is what iv been able to get so far until i ran out of butane for my soldering iron.

and the solder doesnt want to stick to well to these for some reason, ill probably have to tack them down with some glue afterwards to keep the stress down on the weld.

This is with the mirror without the tint activated.

and with the same lighting, with the tint activated.

Kind of like my rear view mirrors with a LCD reverse screen.
