New speakers...am I getting this right?

I'm getting new speakers for my truck. I currently have Sony Xplod 2 ways with a power range of 2-40 watts RMS. The speakers I just bought are Polk db570s with a power range of 6-60 watts RMS. So is 6 watts the minimum amount of power each speaker can operate with? My head unit is a factory one ("Premium" AM/FM/CD with RDS...only offered in the F-150 I believe) from an F-150 meant to power four speakers, but only powering two in my truck. Should it provide enough power for the Polks? I have no idea what its output is. I'm guessing 60-80 watts total.

you'll be fine with the power. if you're looking to get better use out of them later on, it can't hurt to throw an amp in for a bit more power.

Should be around 12-22 watts per channel RMS. Depends on how old it is. Any of the CD6 or mach MP3 decks should be good for a little over 20, a few around 24 watts even.

You should have adequate power, just don't try to turn it up beyond it's capabilities, because the Factory radios are not high fidelity by any means. If over driven you could damage your new Polks.

Ok, thanks. I figured the head unit would be powerful enough for the speakers, but I wanted to double check. I generally don't turn the volume up very high, I just want cleaner, more accurate sound and the Polks seemed like a good replacenent for the Sonys.

I was thinking about getting some of the Xplodes...how would you rate them over the stock speakers?

Honestly, I feel like I wasted $60. The improvement over stock was marginal (and my stock speakers were in rough shape). When I first installed them I just had an AM/FM/Cass head unit and they did fine with that. When I installed the AM/FM/CD head unit I mentioned above I began to notice their short comings. The high notes are alright, but the lows don't sound very good. I'd suggest Pioneers instead of Xplods since they are the same price.

Nah, I imagine he can run the Polk's for quite some time and be happy, especially without external amplification.
