Stock Radio ?'s

Well I went to the junkyard and bought a stock radio, it came out of a 2000 merc. mount. the radio number is yl2f-18c868-ca. For one I am almost positive that this fits into the ranger. I plugged it in and the display as well as the cd player doesn't work, I have read the display is quite a common problem with these radios. If the cd player doesn't work then it isnt worth keeping. I'm deciding between trying to finding a stock unit that fits and works correctly because as lame as it sounds I kind of want a tape deck in my ranger, or simply just going with an aftermarket brand. Which are the better aftermarket units or which stock radio would probably be the best to throw in it? These are probably stupid questions but I'm not really familiar with head units or stock radios for that matter.

Pics of what I got.

One I got from the Junk Yard

Stock unit also not in working condition.
