Latest update..

Welp, I managed to find a Jensen set like the little lady wanted. From my readings on www.siriusbackstage.com, I get the impression that Walmart has some sort of exclusive deal w/ Jensen (who is actually just Audiovox in a different wrapper). I found the Jensen model that Sirius shows on the website at the Wallyworld a few towns over from here. They had exactly one left.. and the box was a little beat up. I bought it anyhow.

We took it home last night and opened it up. She almost immediately hated it! (Siriously, can I ever win?!) I hooked it up to a bench supply I have and fired it up. The display is not red like the packaging and online-images suggest. It is orange, just like the Audiovox sets. And it is huge. From what I can gather it is a 'gen 2' receiver while the latest sets (like the Audiovox PNP3 I bought) is a 'gen 2.5'. Gen 3 units are supposedly comming soon.

Bottom line is she hates it.. so back it goes. Fortunately I did not return the Audiovox.. although now she's found a new Jensen set that she prefers. It is functionally exactly identical to the Audiovox PNP3 I already bought. The difference.. it is painted black instead of silver. Supposedly that will jive better w/ her interior.

I unfortunately broke down and told her that I'm done shopping for these effing things though. She's on her own to find the new Jensen somewhere, then I'll pay for it. Until then I'm holding onto the PNP3, she may yet change her mind. Although I still really like it. I'm trying to cook up a place to mount it in the Ranger. If I figure one out before she makes up her mind I'll probably just keep the darn thing!

On another note, when we sparked up the Jensen set we got at Walmart yesterday, we discovered to our amazment that it worked just fine! The thing was getting subscription stations! I was pretty amazed! I started to think that maybe it was activated by someone, then returned, hence the beatup packaging. We listened to it in my living room for about an hour or so. (I can get reception w/ the antenna on my window sill! Yay!) .. Then suddenly our fun was over. It seems new units are 'activated' for a short time, then timeout after an hour or so and make you subscribe. Bummer.. here and I thought I might be getting a free lunch.

..Ah, what else.. Oh, the FM modulator. So far I'm very impressed w/ the thing. We've yet to take the PNP3 out of the packaging, so I dunno how it will perform. But the older Jensen unit we got yesterday worked REALLY WELL! The unit was on my desk and my home receiver (in the 'living room', though technically the same area) a few feet away received the signal on 88.1 or whatever just fine. The sound was crystal clear w/ zero static. I'm not sure we will have to go w/ an inline FM modulator afterall..

Now if we could just get Bri to farkin' PICK ONE!!!

Yep, gotta pay to play. There is no way around that.. Although when we fired up that Jensen unit last night I almost thought I had found one!
