Bad day for the mids

Bad day for the mids
I was out in the old truck today, making a new panel for an amp. I had to remove the rear passenger speaker to unhook the speaker wire to re-route the wire around the panel.
When my finger brushed the foam surround on the speaker, it literally disintegrated right off the cone & frame of the speaker. I'm not talking about punching my finger through the surround with a ninja death stab. I didn't even notice I had touched the surround until it was stuck to my finger.
I proceeded to wipe all of the surround material off of the cone as well as the frame... just because.
I've never seen anything like this in ALL my years of car audio installs. Not even a 20 year old pyramid 6x9 that I found in a junkyard disintegrated this way.
D@MN!
I've had these mids for over ten years & all of the sudden they turn to sticky dust.
They've never seen daylight (I glued speaker fabric on the inside of the factory grills so nobody could tell there were after market speakers in there). There was no signs of moisture behind the speakers, or anywhere behind the jump seat area.
Guess I got my $169 worth out of them, but I wish they had melted down or frozen or something cool rather than this cr@p.
Oh well...
I'm now looking for a (cheap) new pair of 5x7 / 6x8's that will handle 50w RMS minimum. The Kenwood c6880's look pretty snazzy, as do the Infinity 6812's.
Any suggestions for replacements?

damn that sucks.. wierd, too.
as for a new set, i cant recommend anything because i havent been out looking around in such a long time.
i'm still waiting to buy my 7" mids that i need to mold into my doors to complete my 3 way component setup i've been wanting to build for over 2 years now, lol.

My old Pioneer speakers fell apart just like that after only a few years. A good amp and loud tunes will overwork the cones and turn the surround into dust.
A decent cheap speaker is the 6x8 Jensens found at most Walmarts. I use a set for my rears. http://george-novak.com/serv3.html

Don't be fooled by the low wattage, that amp makes my mids come alive.
Most of the 5x7 / 6x8's I've seen only handle up to 35w RMS and 60w peak... unless I drop $150 for another set & I just don't see spending that much right now. I've lived with a $60 pair in the doors for years so I guess I can live with a $60 set in the back too.

only speakers ive had in my truck are the pioneer 6x8 220W 3 way speakers, the ones in the front doors i have hooked to a 460 watt amp, gain level is 3/4 of the way up and set at full range and the speakers are doing great-they are almost 3 yrs old, but have only been on the amp about 2 months, no problems yet
