burning smell from sub

ok so i have a visonic 1802a amp and a Rockford Fosgate p3sd410 sub which has the dual 4 ohm coils. i have my sub wired + to + and then to the + on the amp...and - to - to - on the amp so it is at 2 ohm (right?) and the sub is 300 watt rms and my amp puts out 600 watt rms at 2 ohm...i have the amp turned down to about 1/2 of its power. i have 8 ga wire for ground, power, every thing in the box and "monster cable" speaker wire which i think is 8 ga also but it doesnt say. now somtimes when i play my music pretty loud for a wile i start to smell a burning smell. it is a weird smell that i cant describe but then if i turn it off for a wile it goes away and doesnt come back till i have it up pretty loud....it doesnt sound weird and my stereo goes up to 40 and at like 25 (which is plenty loud enough to hurt ur ears) it will get the smell after like 30 mins of play time....the sub is only about 2 weeks old and it is my second one with this setup and my other one started to get a rattle sound when ever it was on...but i had my amp up all the way when that happened....so now i have it a little less than half way. any way just trying to figure out what the burning smell is. thanks

Every new sub and amp I have used had a burning wire smell when powered on for the first few times. About 1-2 weeks, but then it went away.

My 12" L5 use to do that, its a weird smell. It was my sub too not the amp. It did it any time I had it hitting really hard for to long at a time. I guess its the resin that holds the voice coil together getting to hot. It never seemed to cause any problems, I always just turned it down low so it could cool off when I smelt it.

I haven't run a system with a sub, but I have had a similar smell from home speakers. I usually attest it to the air in the cabinet. As you are pushing the speakers hard, you get the stagnant air from inside pushed out. I may not know what I'm talking about but it's my $.02!

I'm with filmont, I got an odd smell for a while from my sub at home. Now I can pump it without a smell.

you need to break in the sub properly. its that simple. not blasting it for the first few weeks is usually a good idea turn your amp down, it wont hit but it will after it is broken in you can go back to 1/2 -full power on the amp

even though your gain is turned down on your amp your still puting 600w to it. the gain just adjust the amount of volume put out. the sub will get the 600w still. i would wire your sub to 8 ohms and see if that helps. that should at least get the power down on the amp to were it should be. to do that you have to hook (-) of voice coil #2 to the (+) of voice coil #1. then take the other (+) and (-) and run those wires to the amp.

by playing it like you have you could have already blown the sub. so double check each voice coils ohm load. they should read anywhere between 4.2 and 3.6 ohms.

is it a mono or a 2channel amp that you have?
