Have you looked at the sticky above with the wire colors? That's all I needed to install my new cd player in my 98. One of the previous owners had hacked off the stock wiring harness so I just wired it straight up wire by wire to the new cd player using the wire color sticky. I had bought one of those wiring harness adapters but couldn't use it since the stock wiring harness was gone lol.

Hmm I guess it may not...just found some more info here if you hadn't seen it: Ford Ranger Radio Wiring Diagrams

That page only seems to go back to 1990 though...but it shows different colors for different years. I guess maybe I just got lucky lol.

What color are the wires you're looking at? Is there currently a stereo installed? Maybe somebody that actually knows what they're talking about will speak up also heh.

well the wiring i have is hacked up. the connector for the speakers is there but the connector for the power is gone. i have a yellow wire that is spliced into another yellow wire in the dash. i have a red wire with a huge fuse on it(not sure where it goes to) and i have a ground wire.

the old stereo was hooked up like this:

yellow to yellow
red to red
black was grounded to the dash frame
only one wire of each color for speakers(i'm assuming the (-) wire for each speaker was grounded)

my new stereo has a plug like this:

yellow- constant 12v
red- switched 12v
black-ground
and has a (+) and (-) for each speaker.

should i ground my new radio to the dash like the old one or should i hook it to the ground wire that is in the dash?

use the ground wire in the wire harness, the dash is not a very good source of ground.

It would be worth your time to run new '-' wires from the speakers. The '-' speaker wires should NEVER be grounded.
