i worked on the box today for like 10 mins, lol. i got both faces roughly cut out. 3 layers of 1/4" luan on each side. as you can see in the pic.. i have them strapped down to the box right now so they begin to take shape. theyre not mounted yet. tomorrow (or whenever i work on it agian), i'll be glueing each peice to each other, then glueing the entire face to the box, followed by screws to hold it in place. once they're good and secure on there, i can go ahead and mount the sub mount rings, and cut out the opening for the subs! after that.. its all final touches for paint, then im done! i've got most of next week off.. so hopefully it will be done by then!

I want to see a carbon fiber box one day. ahh the bad ass'ness that would be.
i have carbon fiber vynal (not real carbon fiber of course, but it looks nice) i could use to cover the faces.. but it wouldnt match anything else in the truck.
and yeah, to have an entire box built from carbon fiber would be awesome! light too! |
It wouldnt flex as bad would it? I think it would PWN fiberglass, except on costs.
I always thought of getting a M3 and doing a lot of Carbon fiber/fibre (thats right karrbass is European friendly lol). |
nah, if built with the proper amount of layers, it would be just as strong, if not stronger, than fiber glass. of course you'd want to brace it from within, just like you'd do with any other sub box.
well most the time fiberglass boxes is thick as hell, i think a carbon fiber one would be slighty thinner, but the same stiffness.
lookin good man!
come build me a case for my xbox...i'm wantin to add a LOT of cooling...like, 5 fans, in a sealed compartment.... |
hmm.. lol, where the hell is DanVegas, VA at?
i did a little more work today. i got both faces glued down, screwed down, and got the sub mount rings cut out. i mounted them to the box and cut out the opening for the subs. i checked everything, and everything fits fine, so i started to fill in the gaps with reinforced fiber glass resin. i only got the first coat on the first face, as you can see.. i still have to sand sand sand, and apply a few more layers to round it out some.
wow, it's coming along real nice. :006: good job sir
looks really good mate i like the idea
Can't wait for the finished product. Speaking of which, I should get some pics of my new box on here...BARRMAN! Send me the pics damnit!

Holy crap, man! we have the same exact table and chairs, but we gave em to my grandma!! Nice job by the way. Did you use a jigsaw to cut out the holes? And... is that fiberglass reinforced bodyfiller stuff??

and yeah, i just used a jigsaw.. i would have used the router, but didnt feel like digging it out, the jigsaw was laying at the table already, so i just used what i had in front of me, lol. and yes, thats fiberglass reinforced bodyfiller. i have a couple layers and much more sanding to do yet, though! |
Looking great so far Sean!

i worked a little on my box again tonight.. didnt get much done, i got a headache from the heat, so i quit right after this pic.
That is coming along pretty nice, I am thinking of building a new one soon and you have some good ideas.
That box really is awesome. Looks good in the truck, howmuch airspace is there? You got some talent with building boxes.
the perfect sealed box for these subs only requires a little bit of space.. something like 1.38ft^3. im roughly at 1.45ft^3. it'll go down somewhat once the sub's are in there though, however. so, it's going to be pretty damn close to having a perfect Vb, which will allow me to then tune my system to the best accurate reproduction i'd be able to get it to (with subs).
all subs sound best with the maxed out airspace. I think sealed was a great choice to. I dont know if its just me but i really dont like ported boxes i just think sealed sounds better. Good choice
