Stock head unit, volume will go up/down when high

This is probably a dumb question, but audio isn't my specialty. At high volume with my iPod hooked through my cassette (or cd), the volume will draw down and up depending with the song. If i turn it down some it will get a little louder. Is this the stock stereo trying to save the speakers? or is it just out of power?? :footinmou

What did I tell you about driving while high???

Jeez man

Lol have you checked for a loose wire behind it?

Silver 12-18-2008 07:43 AM

i believe its a i-pod thing because mine does the some thing and i have a aftermarket unit

04blackedge 12-18-2008 07:59 AM

He said it does it with CDs too

Johnbaum13 12-18-2008 08:12 AM

Mine does this when it's cranked all the way up on heavy songs, and when I turn it down a couple of notches, it gets louder. I always racked it up to not enough power from the stock power supply, since the display on the front of the radio dims as well. If anybody has any idea how to get more power to the radio, I'd be interested as well.

iPod works great in my Barracuda. I have a Alpine deck with iPod hookup..no problems. It does do it with CD's as well.

It's just annoying, the speakers can handle it, and the volume modulates up and down..I'll probably have to break down and get a new head unit soon. Try to crank it up while working or what have you..can't even hear the thing outside the truck. :raincloud

missed the cd part but the stock speakers suck so i would start with those

Johnbaum13 12-18-2008 08:25 AM

When/if you get a new head unit, beef up the power supply wire to it so you don't have the possibility of it choking out like the stock one.

BTW what color wire is the constant power on the stock harness?[/thread jack]

Speakers wouldn't be related at all with the volume going up and down. Sounds like that'd be a waste of money. Anyway, I have some pioneer front speakers, stock rears, neither sound like they are struggling...

My guess was the indivitual songs... I know on my ipod some are louder than others and I am too lazy to go through and equalize.... otherwise I have no idea

crazymikey 12-18-2008 01:16 PM

Does the volume increase and decrease during the song, or is one certain song louder or quieter than another?

It could be something as simple as the bit rate the song was downloaded at. I have noticed when I download songs with a lower bit rate, say 96 compared to 320, the volume is lower and the quality is not as good as it is compared to a song that is of a higher bit rate. I don't have an iPod, but I have noticed this volume trend of songs burned to discs. Some are clearer and louder than others.

what radio did your truck come with?

bwester04 12-18-2008 01:57 PM

^x2. Some of the radios have a "compression" button that I believe levels out the volume. So the sound stays equalized throughout the song. That could be a possibility.. I know my 2000 stock single cd headunit had the button, but it could just be built-in on the newer radios.

pace51 12-18-2008 02:00 PM

Mine had that for the cd's. What I could never figure out is why the volume was always lower with my sirius when I was using a sirius direct plug in. But that is one thing I miss the 290W Pioneer system the ranger had stock.

I've never experienced this...
