Well, I just got new subs, and I am thinking about upgrading my speakers too. Right now I am running some old Diamond Audio Motorsport 5.25" components. They are kinda getting crappy, and I want something better. I am thinking of getting a set of Alpine Type X components. I can get them for $250 for each pair. Thats not bad considering they have a list price of $650! I will be pushing them with a Alpine MRV-F353 V12 5 channel amp, although I am not running my sub from it ( I have a RF P3001 to run them). So basically I am using it as a 4 channel. Would these be a good choice, or is there something out there that is almost as good for a lot less. I don't really want to spend that much money right now lol. If I go to Alpine components, everything in the truck will be Alpine except for the sub amp.

 

not sure if your going to upsize your speakers, but I picked up 2 sets of 5.25 components (2 way) for $40.0 each. they sound super crisp and have a great clear sound even without an amp (which Ill be adding this wknd when it arrives)

there is a 3 way component set on ebay for like $110.00 shipped from oxygen, that consists of a 6.5 woofer, 5.25/4 mid and tweeters with 3 way x-overs.
not sure of the wattage, but it shouldnt matter much as long as your not planning on cranking it up so loud it breaks your ear drums.

there is also this set (which Im highly tempted to get) from oxygen as well that has 8" woofers, 5.25 mids and tweeters that can handle 500watts per side.

all in all, I would shop around as there are def better prices at different audio sites.

 

6.5" Pheniox Golds. Only thing is that you'll need to make custom mounts to install them but that's not hard.

 

You don't have to, they sell adapter plates to mount them in the stock spots and Q logics or whatever its called sells kickpanels.

 

When I bought mine they didn't have the adapter plates. Neither did my friends when he got his. He made his. I'm sayin screw that and just buy the ones.

Those Alpine comps. are 100w rms per chan. you will have to bridge your amp to power them barely enough. I would buy something in the 35-75w rms range for that amp.

I know exactly what you mean. I read up on the PG's though and they get great reviews. In my opinion, they're GREAT speakers for the price. That's just my two cents though.

 

So... what if I buy this amp:

And then could I run these at all 4 corners:

my experiences with alpine (either HU or speaker) has been less than stellar.
Im surprised you havent heard of Oxygen, a very well respected company that has good quality builds.

I will admit to never hearing of Quantum prior to getting those sets, but Im really quite happy with them, as mentioned above, very crisp and clear sounding. far better than the coaxles I had before.

 

x2 great sounding speakers for the price i have them :) and they get real LOUD and clear if amped

 

That amp would be an excellent power supply for those speakers.
You would defiantly power both sets well enough.

I do think you should save your money by buying a pair of co-axial for the rear.
or better yet not running the rears at all. It really ruins the sound stage.
the sound stage that comes from component speakers is one of the main ideas behind them.


If your going to be putting 100w + to a quality set of components you will definitely have enough sound volume. believe me.
I think you will have a nice setup if you bridge your amp and buy a less power hungry set of components.
Or if you really want the alpines only buy one set and a nice two chan amp.
then spend your money on some sound insulation for the one set of components.
the doors will need it if you haven't already done so.
It will help the mid bass and really helps the efficiency of the speakers.

 

Well, I wouldn't be opposed to coaxials in the rear, but I def do want rear speakers. I wouldnt mind do some more sound insulating. The floor is done fine, there is a ton of crap under the carpet, but I am not sure about the doors. I don't know if the PO did anything for them or not. Its been a while since I've had the door panels off. We'll see it will be a while before I do this anyway Im sure.

 

Maybe these in the rear, and put the matching Type R components in the front doors with some sound insulation and run the amp I listed before. A lot of music I listen to has a "surround" to it, as in, the music travels around you. It sounds really cool, but wouldn't be the same with only front speakers.

Alpine make great products.

I dont know if I would spend that on a pair of speakers but if you do I would gaurantee you will get what you want. If you want the best look at Focal.

 

i personally have the alpine type x pros which are the speakers you are talking about they make a type x reference and then the type x pro. I have the pros in my front doors running biamped on a alpine v12 four channel, they by far are the most amazing speakers you can buy. I have had a lot of systems and i work for a custom audio shop, since buying mine we have sold prolly 10 pairs in the last year. Simply amazing a good friend of mine had focals and paid i think 1100 per set and to me not enough of a difference for another 450 a pair, if you dont ever want to change them out you will not be wasting the money.

 

At one point in my truck, everything was JL Audio. It sounded amazing. 12" ported w2 sub, 4 JL speakers w/ tweeters and of course a JL Audio amp (6 channel). About a year after install and 1k later all 4 of my JL speakers blew out. Now i still have my JL Audio sub/amp with 2 speakers ( only front) the speakers i am running are JBL's.. I have them amplified and they sound amazing. Bought them for $50 bucks on ebay.. Point being is that name brand stuff is sometimes over-rated. I personally haven't even heard of oxygen or quantum but you would be surprised how quality off-brand speakers are..


EDIT: I wont ever have speakers in the rear again, i was reading an article somewhere and from what i got out of it, the rear speakers pretty much end up canceling out the front. Or it could be opposite but either way i do know for a fact the rear speakers only raise the decibel level by 1 or 2 points.

 

I have Rockford Punch in the front and back of my truck . It is load and they sound good. I did not put the amp in yet and they hit hard.

 

Rockford fosgates ive heard mixed things about, personally ive had too many friends with those speakers that just blow out or stop working.
