sub box material

So I just bought a 12" Rockford Fosgate Punch Sub and they box I bought is too shallow for it; so I want to make my own. My father keeps insisting that MDF is not the material to go for, and he wants to used finished plywood. I'm afraid it won't sound as good if we use that. Has anyone used plywood before? Or what are some other alternatives to MDF?

MDF is the best thing to use, use silicone to seal up all the corners, wood glue and screws, etc, etc.

3/4 in MDF... I just built mine last week.. Works awesome. Ask a professional shop about plywood and see what they say.....

mdf and woodglue is all you need.
seal up the edges with wood glue.....works fine......and if you make any bad cuts or have any leaks....mdf paste :)

i HATE silicone........works like CRAP......cuz it takes years to dry.....(not really but you get it)

Never had a problem with it. I think its more one of those better safe than sorry things, its not totally necessary but it keeps from letting any air escape when the sub hits. Maybe your using the wrong kind of silicone?

The plies in ply wood will de-laminate form the flexing placed on it by the sub's pressure, just have your dad google "how to build a sub box"

Big Man 07-13-2008 07:46 PM

hey thanks for the input everyone, i was able to convince him and we built a box today out of mdf

MDF. and then do what i did and put purple pimp hippie carpet instead of the normal dark grey carpet on boxes
