sub box question

The JL guys told me I need a port in my box that is 3 inch in diameter and 11.5 long. How do I make one like that? What should I use for the material. I have already made my box and I just need to put a port in. Can you guys help please?

ExtremSOHC 08-02-2005 08:20 PM

Are you making this box or doing this to one that is already done.

yeah just use some PVC pipe.. make sure to place it right.. easiest rule of thumb, when its in there, you shouldn't be able to see the sub..

I read somewhere that you want the port facing the same way as the sub. So if the sub was facing the front of the vehicle you want the port opening toward the front of the vehicle right?

Strider0O0 08-03-2005 08:43 PM

nah that isnt always true. actually.. for trucks.. the best results are to have the subs face forward, with the port facing up. you can have them both on the same face though, if you wanted.

alright, ill do that then.

thanks

to me i hate ported boxes made one hated it took it apart turned it into a sealed and loved it my $.02

^^ yeah, the ported boxes are supposed to sound alittle bit distorted and louder, while the sealed boxes are supposed to sound tighter and more clear. I was told something like that.

ExtremSOHC 08-04-2005 10:19 PM

The box design also depends on the music you listen too. Hip Hop and rap sounds better through a ported box. Rock is better in a sealed. I know when I am listing to rock I don't get the crisp sound.

Strider0O0 08-05-2005 01:38 PM

yeah it depends on lots of things.. what you're looking for, as well as what type of music you listen to, and the quality of the build. generally, like mentioned already, if you go with a vented enclosure, you will have a lower SPL level, and a lower F3 point, but the box itself will be large. if you go with a sealed enclosure, you'll end up with a higher F3, but have a smaller box volume, as well as being closest to producing Accurate sound as you can get out of a box.

IM fuked on the type of music thing then, I listen to electronica, rap, and rock... F_CK!!!

Wont the PVC pipe make a lot of port noise compaired to a port with a rolled end?

sand it down to give it that flush lip. i always do that to my ports.. even to any bracing within, i always sand down the edges.. its just for better security.
