I have a 2002 XLT with a stock CD player/stereo. I want to put 2 10 in subs in the back. However, Im new to this and I have a few questions... 1) Do I need to get a new head unit, or does the stock have the required inputs?...2) Any body kno of any custom boxes to fit neatly on the floor of an extended cab so as to not disturb the jump seats( so i dont have to remove em)? They arent used that often but i dont want to make any unnecessary modifications. Thanks in advance for ur help!

for the subs the stock radio dosnt have the preouts for the subs so u need to tap the rear speakers and get some transformer thing from radio shack to convert it to RCA and u will be good, and as for the boxs u will need to build a custom box.

how do u tap the rear speakers? ive done some searching, does ayone kno anything about the MTX thunderbox enclosures for the extended cab rangers? I kno they are a lil steep but they are convenient...

the only thing about useing stock is it doesnt allow the spearer/amp to full ranger cause on the stock radio they auto turn down the bass when you turn your radio up so the speakers dont blow!

the thing they're talkin about in the above posts is called a Line Output Converter (LOC). easiest way to tap into the rear speakers, is behind the headunit.. tap into their lines, then, get a set of RCA's like you'd normally do, and run them to your amp.

I've already posted on the thunder forms. Here's a pic how they two 10's look after they go in. (Right off their website.) If you look at the "will they hit hard" the link to MTX's website for the Thunderforms is there. If you wait until Feb.8th i'll let you know how they hit (thats when their getting installed.)

They are two 10 inch thunder 4500's they can take 200RMS a peice. For the box and the subs (they come together) they run around 500$ (installed) Canadian. (so like 400 american?) Or at least the deal i got. (But u can install them yourself.)

They also come in a amp'd version but its a crappy 200W RMS amp.

ok Strider, so how did i tap into the rears and what do i need to get to do that?...anybody got any pics?

Just go out and buy ya the 2 subs, get an amp that will handle them, both, then get a cd player w pre-amp out puts

go to best buy, or circuit city, or whatever's closest, and buy a Line Output Converter.

pull your head unit out, and take a look at the wiring harness connected to it. there's going to be 2 sets of colored wires you'll need. a set of greens (one will be green, other will be green with a black stripe.. second set will be purple, one solid purple, other will be purple with a black stripe).

make your connections back there by splicing into those lines, then run them to the LOC you've just bought. Green is Left Rear, and Purple is Right Rear (the ones with the black stripes are negative, solid are positive). from there... connect your RCA's to the other side of the LOC, and run them to your amp, where ever you put it.

most of the newer LOC's come with little attentuator's now, which allow you to adjust the signal a bit, so, make sure to tweak that too.

EDIT: just thought i'd mention.. LOC's come in lots of different shapes and sizes.. so if they give you something that may have plugs hanging off of it or something, don't worry.. as long as its a LOC, it'll work. that pic above was the first thing i googled to show an example of what one looks like.. i think it was from crutchfield. you'll find them anywhere from 20 to 40 dollars normally... sometimes, maybe even cheaper.
