Subwoofer opinions

Right now I'm interested in upgrading to a new subwoofer. Was hoping to get some opinions, doesn't matter how much you know, any help is great as I am known to be a "flip-flopper" - one minute i want this next moment im interested in something else lol. Please keep in mind the cost efficiency too, so even if one sub is definitely the best, but way more expensive, maybe thats not the way to go, however I don't want price to be a factor. Looking to get a sub that wants between 300-600watts RMS.

Alright, a few things:

- I posted both type R subwoofers (old and new) because I really like the surround better on the old model (and its cheaper) but the new one has a really wierd looking surround that doesnt look as able to hit excursions however it does have a better looking magnet structure.

- I posted the Infinity VQ instead of just the regular Perfect for no particular reason, I don't know if i'd really need the Variable Q technology.

- Is a single 12w3 worth buying? Looking at the w3's specs and design it looks like its a strength in numbers subwoofer.

- The 12w6 seems to be a popular choice and I love the fact it only wants about 400watts rms. However, its the most expensive.

- As of right now I already have the Pioneer premier subwoofer. When i first hooked it up I was like holy toledo this is loud, now that i'm used to it, it doesnt do anything for me. Should I stick with this subwoofer? As in will I not see signficant improvement from these other drivers? I only paid 70 dollars for it lol. Thanks again for any help.

I have a 12" RE SE with 600rms in a sealed box right now, the sound quality is great and its pretty loud too. I'm gunna build a ported box soon because I want it even louder!

do an older type r with 300-400 rms. they are great subs and i have always compared them to a JLW3. i have a W6 in my truck and push it with a JL500/1 sealed and it handles all music very well. never had any complaints for the RE line at all so you may want to look into that. if you have any box building skills or want to try you may just build a custom tuned ported box for your pioneer and watch that thing sound twice as good and only cost you like 50 bux and a day or two.

I used to have a single 10w3 in my single cab 93 Ranger and it kicked *** lol. Of course my 2 10's now is louder, but that thing was great. It doesnt require much power, but it does get loud.

Out of the ones i listed, I was really leaning towards the Type R. I'm already getting Type R door speakers, and i was looking at the w6 really hard too. The w6 is very appealing except for the price obviously since the type r is less than half the price. I've always been a fan of RE audio, but that might actually be too big for what I'm going for at the moment, if I went RE i would probably want to upgrade my electrical system and buy a really good amp to complement it. Based on everyones responses, I should stay away from the Boston Acoustics, Infinity, and MTX that i listed. Would a ported type R be a good buy? or should i save some more money and go for the w6? Right now i have 250 bucks to spend. Also any opinions on the new surrounds on the new type R? thanks again everyone.

if you want cheap sql (if you want to call it that) get the swr 1221 (dual 2 ohm type r) you can wire down to 1 ohm and make the most power of your amp

if you want QUALITY...ahhhh RE...take advantage of the group buy if it is still going on (i'm not even sure) i would reccomend an SX

if you want to spend a lot of money and do exactly what an re can do (IMO the RE SE/SX is a lot "better") get a JL. I like jl almost as much as audiobling

my opinion on jl, overpriced and overrated. Get an re...you won't be disapointed.

i own a 10" type r with a box custom built by mark potts (basically the type r expert) go to thecaraudiobox.com and check him out. I am about a high 130 low 140 right now...i'm just guessing. I'm running a hifoinics 1605d amp...pretty overpowered for that little 10...but it's ok. sounds great

if you get a type r...definetly port it, the difference in that sub from ported to sealed is like night and day. I owned a ported and sealed box both running that same amp and sub...and words can't explain how that box lit up that sub.

overall, i like the type r's...i'm not some crazy teen worried about the hype...i just want to sound good and be moderately loud. The type r did it for me. I've now owned over 12 of those subs (I tend to blow VC and cones a lot because I always overpower my subs either from clipping (back in the day before i iknew whats up) or from just over-excursion)

Pm me if you want to know more...I am very educated IMO on car audio.

edit: and i've also owned the new and old model subs. the surround on the new ones rocks my socks...literally. they take so much more than rated power (over the old ones) and they excursion like crazy. I should have a video up soon, i just have to get my digicam. I have quite a long excursion type r...if there is such a thing!!

basically...get a type r in a nice ported box...go onto caraudio forums and hit up moe lester and he will hook you up with a nice one. or just go to thecaraudiobox.com

Well I have Audiobahn and I'm semi-satisfied with them but with all of the subs I've listened to at work the Alpine Type-Rs are by far the clearest sounding.

the infinity subs actually sound really good... i saw one at circuit city for really cheap. and they let us play with it and a bunch of other amp combos. but if you want a surprise. find a visonik sub and pair it with a visonik amp... VERY cheap and sounds like anything else. its also a ton louder than i expected when i bought it for S and G's.

i wouldnt reccomend a SX for a sealed box at all sealed is more up the SE's alley and for 600 rms you will not need electrical up grades and any 400-600rms amp would be good SE is dual 4ohm so find and amp that does that at 2ohms
