Ported Subwoofer Box - Port Tuning

I am at a loss for what frequency to tune my ported box to. I want a good tight deep note - sound quality, not SPL.

I am thinking 32-34 Hz?

Anyone familiar with doing this?

i had the specs for my old accord saved at my house, (im at my girls 2hrs north) but i dont think youd want those specs cause i was goin for spl rather than quality .... and i think most people who run a ported will tell you the same ported arent excatly known for hitting tight

Where are you putting the box? Remember ported enclosures are the most efficient, but are probably the worst for sound quality.

I had a 42hz and a 34hz tuned boxes with two 10" Comp CVRs in my car. The 34Hz was deep and boomy, a hard hit but not a lot of control and a noticable amount of distortion in some of the freq range (higher end). The 42Hz box is what I run now, it doesn't reproduce the lower spectrum as well as the 34Hz (obviously), but the SQ and speaker control is considerably better with the high tune. Like Melt said, the 34Hz would be better if you're willing to sacrifice a little SQL for SPL.

I have 2 alpine SWR 1040 10" subs. They are in a sealed box now, I want to go ported so I can get deeper lows.

My first experience with a ported sub of my own was a Infinity PS212 Home theater sub, and I love it. So much deeper than my 10's, because it is ported. I do not care about SPL.

I had a set up tuned at 38hz sounded good all the way threw but the lows could of been better. Even had a solobaric l7 tuned at 28hz and it loved low end. Stick with 32 or 34hz either will be plenty low and still do good on the higher end.

Does anyone have any port-noise nightmare stories?

Nobody has built their own box and experienced bad port whistle?

Not whistle but I have built a box where you can hear it blowing past the port, If its behind the seat you may never hear it.

I have two infinity kappa perfects in my focus in a sealed box and always prefered for SQ and they do get deep. Just not hard hitting to set off alarms but I got out of that 10 years ago. Match the box size to your woofers, Yes Size matters

I am using flared ports to help reduce port noise. What diameter port did you use where you had this problem? What size were the subs?

Sealed enclosures are the way to go.......And just for grins, calculate the wavelength of a 32hz tone........

I've had these subs in a sealed box for about 4-5 years and recently I bought a ported home sub (400 watt infinity PS212 model) - it sounds so much better to me that I almost cant compare the difference to the sealed box of the truck. If you look at most really high end home equipment it is all ported, but designed right by the manufacturers. I think your comment is applicable to the average joe who just slaps together a ported box, but I'm really trying to engineer this to optimal sound quality.

Rounding all corners in the port will also reduce port noise. Ive notice the bigger the port, the less noise.

Oh course, bigger port means slower air movement, less turbulence. I bought port flares for the box, I just forgot to post it. It's almost done being built I will post pictures and plans for you guys.

Just figured I'd give some pictures of progress so far....

I bought the "make your own flared port" kit it looks like it will work out really nice.

a tip for next time, all those screws arent needed, screws just hold the wood in place for the glue to fully cure. the glue is what holds the box togeether. i dont even use screws, i use a brad nailer.

I used wood glue, you cant see it because the caulk is in there too. I felt better safe than sorry I guess.

When i put screws in my boxes, i try to space them out around 3.5-4 inches apart.

Box is 99% done. All I have to do now is have the aluminum finish panel that goes on the alpine amp machined down so my RCA's will fit in the back with the finish panel on, and I also need some cool speaker grilles. I am pretty happy with how it came out. It sounds deeper and thicker than the sealed box I had and the bass is just as tight. I tuned it to 31.5Hz
