What size amp?

I just got 2 kicker 10's (in a box) for christmas, and i have a 500w amp, but when i turn up my music, it kicks off and shuts the subs off, about what size amp would be good for the 2 10s?
i dont want to much amp that will blow my subs, but i want to run them without em shutting off when it goes louder. Can anyone help?

if there going off like that, your trying to get the amp to go up higher than it can so its going into safe mode. did you set the gains properly?

500 should be good with 2 tens. what are the specs for the kickers? RMS?

My bro said "150 RMS per speaker, 300 altogether."

Kris03 12-25-2011 07:09 PM

oh then your gunna blow those speakers up. 500 is over powering them.
your gunna want a mono 300 watt amp or a two channel 300 watt amp that does 150 per channel.

But i had my 2 8"s hooked up to the same amp for about 10 months and they never blew, played them real loud too

Kris03 12-25-2011 07:15 PM

were the 8's rated at a higher wattage? or were the gains set lower?

oro siempre 12-25-2011 07:20 PM

not sure about the 8's, they are Rockford Fosqates, and i got em from a friend. so idk anything about them

Kris03 12-25-2011 07:22 PM

so all you did was switch the subs? its possible the subs just cant handle the extra power. i dont know why it would be the amp since it worked with the 8's before so im guessing it would be what changed which is the new subs

oro siempre 12-25-2011 07:25 PM

So is there anyway i can just tweak the output power on the 500w amp? or would i have to go and buy a 300w amp? (which is my last resort) i can afford it, just dont want to unless its absolutely necessary.

this is a good example of my subs, not exact but close.- http://www.ebay.com/itm/KICKER-DUAL-...ht_3587wt_1270

Kris03 12-25-2011 07:27 PM

what ohms does your amp put out 500 watts? and what ohms is your subs?

oro siempre 12-25-2011 07:33 PM

Its night out atm so i cant see the amp at the moment because i have no light in the truck, but this website shows the exact same subs i have, and has all the specs on it, please review it and get back to me asap thanks

im going to go by what i think it might bee but i need to know what amp you have to be certain

if the subs are 4 ohm and there wired together there gunna give you a 2 ohm load
and if your 500 watt amp is advertised 500watts for 4 ohms then its going to be close to 800 or 1000 watts in 2 ohms which is far too high for those subs and would cause damage to either amp or subs. the reason your 8's worked could be because they were wired in 4 ohms.

the best thing to do is to turn your gain on your amp all the way down and turn your volume up about 3/4 the way up and then just turn up your gain till you got it as loud as you will want to listen or when it starts sounding distorted which ever comes first... but essentially your gunna want an amp that puts out 300 watts in 2 ohms

OK thanks, and i will look at the amp tomorrow, and give you all the details that way you can verify your advice, just keep tuned in on this thread tomorrow please, and thank you for your advice, it is very much appreciated, merry christmas

Kris03 12-25-2011 07:44 PM

yea no problem. i will do so. and yea i just need to know the specs to see what could be happening. Merry Christmas

rangerboy101 12-25-2011 09:27 PM

Oh boy....You're not going to blow two Kicker 10's with 500w. You're amp is kicking off because more than likely, you have the gain set too high. Try setting the gain proper and you shouldn't have any troubles.

oro siempre 12-26-2011 01:52 PM

@Kris03-- well here is the exact amp i have, its not the best brand or the best amp, but its what i have-- http://www.productreview.com.au/p/so...l.html#details

@rangerboy101-- idk how to set the gains, i dont have much background with these types of things, so any way you can explain?

Kris03 12-26-2011 03:32 PM

that amplifier is not a mono 500 watt amp. its a 4 channel and you cant wire it to one channel stable. its shutting off and going into safety mode. you need a 2 channel or mono channel amplifier. how do you have it wired?

and to set the gains preferrably you want a voltmeter. but if you dont have one you just turn all of your bass and treble settings to 0. all your eq settings to flat. turn off any loudness feature you may have. turn your gain on your amp all the way down and turn up your volume to about 3/4 way. go to your amp and start slowly to turn up the gain till you start hearing distortion then slightly back off. youll want to do this on a song with high quality or preferrably a 50hz sinewave tone

oro siempre 12-26-2011 03:58 PM

ahhhhh okay, can you reccomend an amp that would be good for me? if not its okay, ill do my research.

Kris03 12-26-2011 05:02 PM

Ya sure. Whats your budget?
Ima big JL fan. Alpine is good. Kenwood wasnt bad.

oro siempre 12-26-2011 05:10 PM

well, im really not wanting to spend more then 100 on one, atleast until i get my truck painted and a bedliner, so any good ones for under 100$? think you said i need a 300w or something like that.

Kris03 12-26-2011 06:40 PM

yea a 300wat monoblock @ 2ohms
