Mounting the amp to the sub gives you a great opportunity to find cold solder joints in the amplifier circuitry.

Car Audio Installed So Far:

Eclipse CD8443 Headunit (competition series, theres no little 50x4 or 60x4 max wattage restricting my system; must have speaker amp to power the speakers)
Morel Hybrid Ovation 6 Components in the front (just got 'em 7/13)
2 Eclipse 12" Aluminum Subs
Eclipse PA5422 (800 watts, i got it bridged so each front speaker recieves 400 watts, rms.. their max is 600watts, i love 'em)
Eclipse DA7122 (2000 watts, powering my 2 subs right now, waiting for a third to be installed)
Phoenix Gold Distribution block (nothing really.. just breaking my 0 gauge power wire into 4 ga. for the amps)
Monster Cable 150 Amp. Circuit Breaker
Monster Cable MicroXLN Series RCAs (both amps)
Monster Cable Speaker wire (all new wiring to speakers.. factory wire blows)

Future Audio Installs Coming Soon:

10 Fared Cap by Phoenix Gold, not a 1.0, a 10!
3rd Sub (gotta find the room for it first)
DVD player (not a HU, just a seperate player)
LCD Screen (again, gotta find the room first!)
Second battery (still running off stock Motorcraft!)
I guess that's it for now!

In the Skyline, it just has an aftermarket CD player and upgraded 6x9's in the back.

In the Mustang, I have the following:

Head Unit: Sony CDX M600 -- 50x4

In the dash: 2-way Rockford Fosgate Punch FRC4203 3-1/2" -- 30w

In the doors: 3-way Sony Xplod XS-V1640H 6-1/2" -- 250w

In the rear: 4-way Pioneer TS-A6880R 6"x8" -- 240w

For not having an amp, or the best top of the line receiver, it hits and kicks pretty good. I would like to put in a small 8" sub someday though. Also, the 'Stang will be receiving an MP3 player when I start driving it more.

It must have a DC to DC converter to do that so it's going to be a big and heavy hot running head unit. It's not possible to get that kind of wattage out of an IC amp.

Most likely that's peak rating. RMS for Pioneer MOSFET50 systems run about 22 watts. 60 watts rms isn't even possible for the Alpine VDrive head units.
