Where to route power wire through firewall?
I am installing my system in my ranger soon and i dont know where to run the power wire through the firewall, i cant seem to find any holes or grommets i can use. im not sure where to look. ANyone know where i should run my power through the firewall?
P.S.-my truck is a 2003 ranger edge ext cab 4x4 4.0 v6 auto pics would help but w/e |
I opted to break out the dremel and make my own hole( on the driver side, way up behind the dash) Use a rubber grommet to prevent any metal rubbing through the insulator, and accidental shorting/welding in the future.
Others simply poked a hole in the rubber boot around the steering shaft, and pulled it through there. |
whered u make a hole with the dremmel? and through the boot where, and it wont interfere with the shaft will it?
|
i ran wires along the back of the brake booster, and then down along the frame rails near the tranny. I then cut a small hole in the gromet under the seat and poked a small hole in the carpet.
|
look near the pedals thats where mine was
|
If the wires aren't too big, you can cut a small hole in the emergency brake grommet, and run some stuff through that.
|
im still confused kinda, where would i make a hole, do you mean along the framerails outside the cab, or inside, and i didnt see nothin by the pedals
oh and whats the plastic cover on the firewall behing the boz with all the relays? |
Dremel will prolly be your best bet

step drill bit and a drill. use grommet and call it a day. watch for wires and dont route near hot or moving parts. always fuse as close to the battery as possible. have a great time.

I think you're over thinking it Jim. It's just as simple as checking both sides of the firewall to the best of your ability and drilling a hole. The higher you can get the more it'll be out of the way. Mine was pretty much in the middle of the steering shaft and the main wiring harness. Just check both sides before you drill to be sure you have at least 2-3 inches from any wiring or other equipment.

I went thru my steering column gromet.

well i got it wired up i went through the parking brake release wire grommet. It sounds great and the wires are ou of the way hidden

Look directly behind your clutch pedal. theres a big black rubber grommet. Just poke a hole in it with anything, and pull youre wire through.
|
I've been doing this for my nitrous leads and I have one problem going through the same grommet as the clutch master cylinder and it's been bugging me.
If your clutch master cylinder fails you are screwed unless you have installed inline connectors so you can unplug your wiring. Otherwise you will be cutting your wires to get the thing out. I plan on drilling new grommet holes when i do my emergency lights and siren wiring. I'll mostly likely pull the wires out of the CMC grommet and use a new one.

I used to have a couple of wires through the clutch grommet. When I installed my alarm, I needed to add more wires and decided to tidy things up. I ran the wires through grommets installed in holes drilled through the firewall above the factory bulkhead connector. While I was drilling, I added some extras holes/grommets for future mods in various sizes and plugged them temporarily with bolts.
