Wiring in a backup camera
I got a best buy gift card for my bday so figured I might as well use that for a backup camera. I know about wiring it to the headunit but I'm not sure where to tap in to tell it it's in reverse?
|
You're talking about the headunit right? Since you're an 07 you have to run the reverse wire on the headunits harness under the truck and connect it to the black/pink reverse wire on the transmission. My truck is older so I'm lucky and have my wire on the firewall inside the truck. I think in started in 04 but the newer trucks don't have the reverse wire enter the cab of the truck at all.
|
On both my 2004 and 2003 I used the reverse light wire at the tail light itself to tell my screen and camera to turn on. My back up screens are inside of my reverse mirrors, but that does not matter - same style operation.

You can run the headunits wire all the way to the back too, but IMO it's just more work. The only thing I connected to my tails was the backup camera power wires.
|
I just ran it the same time I did the video cable, so it wasn't any extra work.

What Cameras did you guys use ?
I was looking at the Pioneer to match my radio (suggested by Pioneer) but was wondering if there was something less expensive but as good ? |
I bought 25$ cameras from fleebay. I grafted them into a liscense plate surround. I did one for each of my trucks and on my 2003 it leaked water. I think this is because at delta-sonic the guy was pressure washing it when I drove through the carwash. I'm not sure if these cameras I have are really any good because of this. So far the replacement has been ok for a few weeks but I haven't driven it through a carwash again - I've just washed them by hand, and its rained plenty of times with no problems.
|
so basically i'll need to run wire from the camera and reverse lights all the way up to the headunit wiring?
sorry if im a bit slow, still a bit hungover but this is my last day off to do this lol |
haha love the honesty!

Yep. You either have to run both the video RCA from the camera and the reverse input wire from the headunit all the way, or just the video RCA and connect the reverse input wire to the wire on the transmission.
Take out the Seat, put the truck in Reverse with the Key on and the Reverse Lights on and probe for 12V. Check out if there is a signal after you take the truck out of reverse or not just to be on the safe side. If Ok then wire that as the turn on circuit, IF 12 volts is what the Reverse Circuit needs to turn on...

Scrambler, I think this is what your talking about. It would work great for that application, they sell more expensive models that come with remotes too
Amazon.com: Sima SVS-14 4 Input Manual A/V Selector: Electronics |
we got one of those in our rear view mirror here at work -- I was going to get some for the black ranger since parking a tall beast would be kinda hard -- but since I went the other direction thats out the window..

Amazon.com: Sima SVS-14 4 Input Manual A/V Selector: Electronics i think someone that either needs more than one camera on the rear or just wants cameras all the way around needs something like this. I bookmarked it for future use, maybe three cameras in the rear and one on each side… LoL. |
didn't get a pic but its mounted on top of the roll pan between the tube tailgate. perfect size in between there.

I would think you pickup the signal either under the dash or from the Feed-thru under the driver’s Seat to activate the Camera Circuit, so the only wire going back needs to be the RCA Pickup.

I looked up the wiring diagrams. The newer trucks don't have the reverse wire in the cab at all, the closest spot is the transmission. But for my truck and yours the closest spot is on the firewall, I have the tutorial up for how to install a double din and reverse camera and there is a picture in there of where the wire is.
