Dirt in Dash

I was driving my truck the other day and noticed this when the sun hit the dash just right. It looks like dust bunnies!?! (see pic)..

I thought that part was airtight so nothing could get in there? Any good way of cleaning in there without tearing the dash apart too much? Is this normal?

Also if you notice in the picture it looks like the paint is peeling around PRND21 display. WHat the heck is that??

it is not airtight. there are many openings in there. as for getting it apart, you will have to remove the radio bezel, lower panel under steering column, and the speedo bezel.

The biggest opening is around the trip meter reset. You will have to take the lens off. No other way to clean it.

Yep, you have to tear it all the way out. I just cleaned mine out whilst I was replacing my cluster bulbs w/ led's. Mine wasn't quite as bad as the OP's, but it had a dried up leaf laying in the bottom and a dog pecker gnat stuck in the odometer.

Link doesn't work for me, but if it's the how-to on here, for those w/o tilt, it's a little more difficult to remove the dash trim surrounding the cluster. I dropped my column down a little by loosening the 2 8mm nuts supporting the column, and removed the plastic column trim, which gave me room to remove the dash surround. I searched and never found the info. on that, so maybe this will help someone else if they are also looking for the information

I don't have tilt on mine so it doesn't sound like very much fun....

It's not too difficult. Just don't get frustrated and jerk on stuff and end up breaking trim pieces. Should only take 2 or 3 hours even as a first time doing it.

Here's the link for the "How-To":
