Cleaning chrome rims

Got some new rims and tires today. needed them for inspection and winter. they are small, they are only 30x9.50x15 but for 150 can't beat it. I'll get some 32's in spring.

My question is whats the best way to clean the rust up? I really don't want to paint them unless they are really bad after cleaning.

I use 000 steel wool. cleans the rust right off, and then I clean them with RainX window cleaner for that extra shine.

As was mentioned, phosphoric acid will clean rust, as
will 'Naval Jelly", which is phosphoric acid based.
The trick with chrome is that the rust has to be cleaned
without scratching the chrome.

Once you get the rust off, the chrome must be protected
or it'll quickly rust again. Polish or wax will work for a short
time, but I've found a clear coat paint works pretty well.....

Go to your Ford dealer's part center and ask them for Ford Custom Bright Metal Polish. Use some of that after 0000 Steel wool. I'm pretty sure you'll be amazed. Just don't use them at the same time.

Old school chrome like from the 70's and earlier, didnt rust like todays chrome jobs do. Hell you didnt even have to wash the dirt off it and itll never rust... Looking back I wish I would have taken the bumper off the old truck... 1977 van, with the original chrome bumper.... didnt see any TLC for the last 12yrs or so and still looked new the day I dragged it to the junk yard.
